TFP Bureau, Raipur, November 12, 2025: In a proud moment for Chhattisgarh, Rajnandgaon district\u2014popularly known as Sanskardhani<\/em>\u2014has been declared the Best District in the East Zone<\/em> at the prestigious 6th National Water Awards 2024<\/em>organized by the Ministry of Jal Shakti, Government of India. The district will receive the honor from the President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu, on November 18, 2025, in recognition of its outstanding achievements in water conservation, sustainable management, and community-driven initiatives.<\/p>\n

The award marks a milestone in the district\u2019s journey toward water sustainability, standing out among districts across five eastern states after detailed inspections by the Central Ground Water Board, the Central Water Commission, and other expert teams. Rajnandgaon\u2019s consistent and result-oriented efforts to restore groundwater levels and promote rainwater harvesting have transformed it into a model district for the entire nation.<\/p>\n

Turning Public Participation into a Water Revolution<\/h4>\n

The success of Rajnandgaon\u2019s Mission Jal Raksha<\/em> stems from a robust partnership between the government, administration, and citizens. The district administration, in collaboration with panchayats, women\u2019s self-help groups, industrialists, students, and voluntary organizations, launched an extensive campaign that transformed water conservation into a mass movement. From rural hamlets to urban neighborhoods, the collective message\u2014\u201cIf there is water, there is tomorrow\u201d<\/em>\u2014became the driving force behind sustainable change.<\/p>\n

Farmers across the district have adopted water-efficient practices such as crop diversification, rainwater harvesting, and groundwater recharge. In the 2021\u201322 report of the Central Ground Water Board, three blocks in Rajnandgaon were marked as semi-critical zones due to excessive water use. Recognizing the urgency, the district launched Mission Jal Raksha<\/em> to first stabilize and then improve groundwater levels through planned interventions and public awareness campaigns.<\/p>\n

Women and Youth at the Forefront<\/h4>\n

Women\u2019s groups played a vital role in spreading awareness about water conservation through initiatives such as the Neer aur Nari Jal Yatra<\/em>. Padma Shri awardee Phoolbasan Bai Yadav spearheaded the movement, uniting thousands of women across villages and strengthening the mission through local Jal Yatras<\/em>. Students, too, actively contributed by organizing rallies, tree-planting drives, and competitions aimed at promoting responsible water use.\"\"<\/p>\n

Under Mission Jal Raksha<\/em>, the district prioritized modern, GIS-based technical solutions including recharge wells, borewell-cum-injection systems, percolation tanks, farm ponds, and the revival of traditional ponds. The strategy focused on groundwater control, rainwater harvesting, and large-scale community participation to ensure long-term water security.<\/p>\n

The recognition from the Ministry of Jal Shakti underscores Rajnandgaon\u2019s success in blending technology with public participation.
