<\/p>\nTFP Bureau, Raipur, December 30, 2025: The long-awaited Futhamuda Canal construction project in the Nagri development block of Dhamtari district is rapidly progressing, marking a significant milestone in strengthening the region\u2019s irrigation infrastructure and agricultural economy. Widely regarded as a foundation for a new green revolution in the area, the project is expected to bring lasting and transformative benefits to farmers and rural households across Nagri.<\/p>\n
Originating from the Sandal Dam of the Gangrel Reservoir near Futhamuda village, the canal will span approximately 19.74 kilometres. Once completed, it will provide assured irrigation facilities to around 1,940 hectares of agricultural land spread across 22 villages in the Nagri development block. This permanent irrigation arrangement is expected to substantially expand the area under both Kharif and Rabi crops, enabling farmers to shift from rain-dependent farming to more reliable and diversified agricultural practices.<\/p>\n
Officials of the district administration and the Water Resources Department said the project will play a decisive role in improving crop yields, stabilising farm incomes and encouraging farmers to adopt improved farming techniques. With access to assured water, farmers will be able to grow multiple crops in a year, reduce risk associated with erratic rainfall and invest more confidently in seeds, fertilisers and modern agricultural inputs.<\/p>\n
All major administrative and statutory processes required for the execution of the project have been completed. Land acquisition covering 14.33 hectares across 10 villages affected by the main canal alignment has been finalised. In addition, final approval has been obtained for the use of 24.42 hectares of forest land, removing one of the key bottlenecks that had earlier delayed construction. With these clearances in place, construction work is now progressing smoothly and without interruption.<\/p>\n
According to officials, the impact of the Futhamuda canal project will extend well beyond irrigation. Assured water availability is expected to strengthen the rural economy by generating agriculture-based employment, increasing demand for farm labour and allied services, and supporting activities such as horticulture, dairy and small agro-based enterprises. The project is also expected to significantly reduce seasonal migration of workers from the region by creating stable livelihood opportunities locally.<\/p>\n
The district administration has emphasised that the project is being implemented as a long-term investment in the prosperity of the Nagri region. Ensuring high construction quality and timely completion has been set as a top priority so that farmers can begin reaping the benefits at the earliest. Senior officials recently conducted a detailed inspection of the project site, reviewing construction progress, technical specifications and resource availability. Based on their guidance, execution has been further streamlined to maintain pace and quality.<\/p>\n
Once operational, the Futhamuda canal is expected to emerge as a backbone of agricultural development in Nagri, providing water security for decades to come.
