<\/p>\nTFP Bureau, New Delhi, April 5, 2026: India\u2019s major ports have achieved a significant milestone in the financial year 2025\u201326, collectively handling 915.17 million tonnes (MT) of cargo, surpassing the annual target of 904 MT. The achievement marks a year-on-year growth of 7.06 percent, reflecting enhanced operational efficiency, infrastructure expansion and sustained trade momentum across the country\u2019s maritime gateways.<\/p>\n
The performance of the 12 major ports under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways underscores the impact of strategic reforms and capacity augmentation initiatives undertaken in recent years. The steady rise in cargo volumes is being seen as a strong indicator of economic resilience and increasing global trade integration.<\/p>\n
Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal attributed the record achievement to the government\u2019s focused approach towards port modernization and logistics efficiency. He said the milestone reflects the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to transform India into a leading maritime nation under the Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047.<\/p>\n
According to official data, the Deendayal Port Authority emerged as the top performer during FY 2025\u201326, handling 160.11 MT of cargo. It was closely followed by the Paradip Port Authority with 156.45 MT, and the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) with 102.01 MT. These three ports together accounted for a substantial share of the total throughput, highlighting their critical role in India\u2019s import-export ecosystem.<\/p>\n
Other key contributors included the Visakhapatnam Port Authority, Mumbai Port Authority, Chennai Port Authority and New Mangalore Port Authority, each registering strong operational performance and steady cargo growth during the year.<\/p>\n
In terms of percentage growth, the Mormugao Port Authority recorded the highest rise at 15.91 percent, driven largely by increased handling of bulk commodities. The Kolkata Dock System followed with a 14.28 percent growth rate, while JNPA reported a 10.74 percent increase, supported by rising container traffic and improved turnaround times.<\/p>\n
The increase in cargo volumes has been attributed to multiple factors, including capacity augmentation projects, mechanisation of berths, deeper drafts for accommodating larger vessels, and enhanced multimodal connectivity linking ports with highways, rail networks and inland waterways. Officials said that focused efforts to streamline documentation processes and adopt digital platforms have reduced dwell time and improved ease of doing business at ports.<\/p>\n
Major commodities contributing to the growth included coal, crude oil, petroleum products, containers, fertilizers and other bulk cargo. The rise in container traffic reflects growing manufacturing output and export activity, while higher imports of energy resources indicate expanding industrial demand.<\/p>\n
Over the past few years, the ministry has prioritised port-led development as part of a broader logistics integration strategy. Smart port initiatives, automation of cargo handling systems, installation of advanced vessel traffic management systems, and green port measures aimed at sustainability have collectively strengthened operational efficiency.<\/p>\n
Officials noted that improved capacity utilisation and better asset management have enabled ports to handle larger cargo volumes without major congestion issues. Continuous monitoring of performance parameters, along with investments in infrastructure and technology, has helped ports maintain competitive turnaround times compared to global benchmarks.<\/p>\n
The ministry stated that the record throughput achieved in FY 2025\u201326 reflects growing investor confidence and stable trade flows. It also signals the success of policy reforms designed to integrate ports into global supply chains and reduce logistics costs.<\/p>\n
