TFP Bureau, Korba, April 7, 2026: A gradual but significant shift in cropping patterns is underway in the agrarian regions of Chhattisgarh, with farmers increasingly adopting crop diversification to improve incomes and adapt to changing environmental conditions. In districts such as Korba, where agriculture remains the primary source of livelihood for thousands of rural households, the move away from water-intensive paddy cultivation towards alternative crops like groundnut is emerging as a promising pathway for sustainable growth.<\/p>\n
Chhattisgarh, regarded as one of India\u2019s most agriculture-dependent states, is home to a large population of small and marginal farmers whose livelihoods are closely linked to monsoon rainfall and soil productivity. However, unpredictable weather patterns, rising input costs and increasing pressure on water resources have compelled many farmers to reconsider traditional farming practices. As a result, crop diversification is gaining traction, providing farmers with new opportunities to enhance productivity while reducing dependence on water-intensive crops.<\/p>\n
Supporting this transformation is Bharat Aluminium Company Limited (BALCO), which has been promoting climate-resilient agricultural practices through its sustainable livelihood initiative titled \u2018Mor Jal Mor Maati\u2019. The programme currently supports more than 9,000 farmers across nearly 40 villages, focusing on awareness, training and capacity building in areas such as efficient water management, modern agronomic practices, livestock rearing, value addition of non-timber forest produce and strengthening of Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs). Within this broader framework, groundnut cultivation has emerged as a viable alternative crop that offers both economic and ecological benefits.<\/p>\n
Until a few years ago, groundnut farming in the region remained limited and was largely practiced on a small scale for household consumption. Traditional cultivation methods, high input costs and limited access to organised markets restricted its commercial potential. BALCO\u2019s intervention has helped overcome these challenges by providing improved seed varieties, appropriate fertilisers and technical support to farmers at the grassroots level.<\/p>\n
Farmers participating in the initiative are being trained in scientific agricultural practices such as line sowing, seed treatment and balanced nutrient management. These practices have enabled better crop management, improved soil fertility and increased yields, making groundnut cultivation more profitable and sustainable.<\/p>\n
The results of this intervention are becoming increasingly visible across villages in the Korba region. From fewer than 50 farmers cultivating groundnut earlier, the number has grown to nearly 1,000 farmers today. Average yields of 8 to 10 quintals per acre are being reported, translating into an additional income of approximately \u20b945,000 to \u20b955,000 per acre for farmers. During the financial year 2026 alone, more than 470 farming families benefited directly from groundnut cultivation, while nearly 200 additional farmers adopted the crop after witnessing the success of neighbouring fields.<\/p>\n
For many farmers, the shift has brought both economic stability and renewed confidence. Sunita Rathia, a farmer from Bhatgaon village, said that she had been cultivating paddy for many years but faced rising costs and limited returns. After participating in the Mor Jal Mor Maati programme, she switched to groundnut cultivation and experienced better income prospects. According to her, the crop not only requires comparatively less water but also offers stable market demand, encouraging her to expand the area under cultivation in the coming seasons.<\/p>\n
Similarly, Kanhaiya Lal, a farmer from Bundeli village, described the programme as a turning point for his farming practices. He reported achieving a yield of around 8 quintals per acre this year, the highest he has recorded so far. He attributed this improvement to the training and technical guidance received under the initiative, adding that the increased income has motivated him to explore micro-irrigation and other advanced agricultural practices.<\/p>\n
Apart from higher farm incomes, crop diversification is also contributing to improved soil health and better crop rotation. Groundnut cultivation enriches soil fertility and helps improve the productivity of subsequent crops, thereby enhancing overall farm sustainability. Additionally, shifting away from water-intensive crops reduces pressure on groundwater and irrigation resources, a critical factor in regions facing erratic rainfall patterns.<\/p>\n
Agricultural experts note that such diversification strategies are becoming increasingly important as farmers across central India confront the impacts of climate variability and resource constraints. By integrating scientific farming practices with community participation and institutional support, initiatives like Mor Jal Mor Maati are helping build resilience within rural farming communities.<\/p>\n
The initiative is also demonstrating how partnerships between industry and rural communities can create sustainable livelihood opportunities. Through technical training, improved agricultural inputs and market linkage support, the programme is gradually transforming groundnut cultivation from a marginal activity into a reliable income source.<\/p>\n
As agriculture continues to evolve in response to changing climatic and economic realities, the experience of farmers in Korba highlights the growing importance of diversified cropping systems.
