TFP Bureau, Raipur, June 19, 2026: Smart metering is not a standalone initiative of any state government but a centrally driven programme being implemented across the country under the Government of India\u2019s Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme. Under this national framework, smart electricity meters are being installed in various states, including Chhattisgarh, in line with guidelines and technical standards prescribed by the Centre.<\/p>\n
Officials stated that the state government is supporting the implementation of the scheme with the objective of making the electricity distribution system more transparent, modern, and consumer-friendly. The programme is being executed as part of a nationwide policy decision taken by the Government of India in July 2021.<\/p>\n
The central objectives of the scheme include improving the operational efficiency of power distribution companies, reducing technical and commercial losses, enhancing the quality of electricity supply, and ensuring accurate billing for consumers.<\/p>\n
In Chhattisgarh, the smart meter project was approved by the previous state government in 2022. Following the issuance of tenders and work orders, installation work began in February 2024. The project is currently being implemented based on contracts and agreements already awarded under earlier administrative decisions.<\/p>\n
As per official estimates, smart meters are to be installed for approximately 55 lakh consumers in the state, of which nearly 40 lakh have already been fitted with the new devices.<\/p>\n
The new system is offering multiple benefits to consumers, including real-time monitoring of electricity consumption data every 30 minutes. This enables households and businesses to track usage patterns more effectively and manage consumption efficiently. The system also eliminates the possibility of human error or incorrect readings by meter readers, thereby ensuring more accurate and transparent billing.<\/p>\n
In addition, smart meters provide real-time technical data such as load, voltage levels, and energy consumption trends. This allows the electricity distribution companies to continuously monitor grid performance, identify issues such as overloading and voltage fluctuations, and take timely corrective action. Officials said this is expected to improve the reliability and quality of power supply.<\/p>\n
