TFP Bureau, Raipur, June 26,2026: A pioneering rural development initiative in Chhattisgarh’s Dhamtari district is demonstrating how the convergence of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) and the Jal Nidhi Project can transform water conservation assets into sustainable sources of livelihood and economic growth.<\/p>\n

Under the innovative “Livelihood Dabri” model, farm ponds excavated through MGNREGA are being utilized for scientific fish farming and integrated agriculture, creating new income opportunities for rural families that have traditionally depended on paddy cultivation alone.<\/p>\n

To assess the impact of the initiative, the Dhamtari Collector conducted an extensive field visit to Bothapara and Chanagaon villages in Nagri development block. During the inspection, the Collector interacted with women fish farmers and progressive cultivators, describing the model as a sustainable pathway towards rural prosperity and self-reliance.<\/p>\n

Officials informed the Collector that a standard Livelihood Dabri measuring 20x20x3 metres can be developed under scientific supervision at an estimated cost of around \u20b933,000. The integrated fish farming model has shown strong potential to generate returns nearly double the initial investment, significantly enhancing farm incomes at a relatively low cost.<\/p>\n

A key factor behind the project’s success is the partnership forged with Abis Company under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme. The company is providing participating fish farmers with a 25 per cent discount on fish feed, reducing input costs and improving profitability. The initiative has strengthened the commercial viability of fish farming and encouraged wider participation among rural households.<\/p>\n

The project has also emerged as a powerful example of women’s economic empowerment. During the visit, the Collector inspected the farm of Savitri Darro of Bothapara village, who has transformed her seven-acre agricultural holding through the construction of two livelihood ponds. Once dependent solely on paddy cultivation, she now rears commercially valuable fish species including Catla, Rohu and Mrigal, creating an additional source of income for her family.<\/p>\n

In another encouraging development, Savitri’s son, Omprakash, has been selected for advanced training in modern fish farming techniques at Puri in Odisha. Upon completion of the programme, he is expected to share his knowledge with farmers and youth across the region, helping spread scientific aquaculture practices.<\/p>\n

The Collector also visited the farm of progressive farmer Narayan Singh Netam of Chanagaon village, who has adopted an integrated farming approach by combining fish farming with mango cultivation. By utilizing nutrient-rich pond water for horticulture, Netam has achieved higher productivity and established a year-round income stream. The Collector inspected the quality of water in the ponds and reviewed the overall effectiveness of the integrated model.<\/p>\n

During the inspection, the Collector directed officials to ensure productive utilization of every government and private asset created under MGNREGA. He emphasized that the scheme should go beyond providing temporary employment and instead create long-term livelihood opportunities for rural families.<\/p>\n

Officials said the convergence of MGNREGA, water conservation and scientific fish farming has the potential to strengthen nutritional security, empower women and contribute significantly to the rural economy of Chhattisgarh.<\/p>\n

The Livelihood Dabri model has already been successfully implemented in 16 villages of Dhamtari district. Encouraged by its positive outcomes, the district administration has now set a target to expand the initiative to 50 livelihood ponds across 50 villages in the next phase, positioning it as a model for sustainable agricultural development and rural economic empowerment across the state.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
