Government promotes Direct Seeded Rice, pulse and oilseed cultivation to minimise risks from possible erratic monsoon and El Ni\u00f1o conditions<\/strong><\/h3>\n

TFP Bureau, Raipur, July 3,2026: Anticipating the possibility of below-normal and erratic rainfall during the 2026 Kharif season due to the potential impact of El Ni\u00f1o, the Chhattisgarh government has issued an advisory urging farmers to adopt climate-resilient farming practices to safeguard crop production and reduce cultivation costs.<\/p>\n

Prepared under the leadership of Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai and the guidance of Agriculture Minister Ramvichar Netam, the contingency plan focuses on efficient water management, crop diversification and scientific farming practices to help farmers cope with uncertain weather conditions.<\/p>\n

The Agriculture Department has advised farmers to prefer short- and medium-duration crop varieties and adopt the Direct Seeded Rice (DSR) method instead of the traditional transplanting system. According to officials, DSR can reduce water consumption by nearly 20 per cent, lower cultivation costs by around \u20b95,000 per acre and enable crops to mature 12 to 15 days earlier.<\/p>\n

To maximise rainwater utilisation, farmers have been asked to prepare fields in advance by clearing bunds, undertaking timely ploughing and constructing field embankments before the onset of rains. These measures are expected to improve water conservation and soil moisture retention.<\/p>\n

The department has also recommended that farmers cultivating upland areas shift from paddy to comparatively drought-tolerant pulse and oilseed crops such as pigeon pea (arhar), green gram (moong), black gram (urad), groundnut, soybean, sesame and niger. These crops require less water and can provide better returns under low-rainfall conditions.<\/p>\n

Officials have further encouraged row sowing, saying it facilitates weed management, conserves soil moisture and promotes stronger root development, thereby improving crop resilience during dry spells.<\/p>\n

The advisory also stresses the importance of seed treatment before sowing. Farmers have been advised to use Carbendazim and Thiamethoxam-Imidacloprid for seed protection, along with appropriate bio-fertilisers such as Azospirillum for paddy, Azotobacter for other crops and Rhizobium for pulse crops. In case of poor germination by July 15, farmers have been advised to increase the seed rate by 10 per cent during re-sowing.<\/p>\n

For delayed sowing, the department has recommended planting moong and urad by the end of July, while sesame, sunflower and medium-duration pigeon pea varieties may be sown during August.<\/p>\n

The government has also advised balanced fertiliser application during drought-like conditions. Instead of heavy nitrogen application, officials recommend foliar spraying of a 2 per cent urea solution or two bottles of Nano Urea per acre. Pulse and oilseed crops should receive a 2 per cent DAP foliar spray about one month after sowing.<\/p>\n

To improve water availability during dry periods, farmers have been encouraged to construct temporary check dams using sand-filled cement bags, harvest rainwater in ponds, farm ponds and wells, and use the stored water for life-saving irrigation when required. Adoption of drip and sprinkler irrigation systems, weather-based crop planning and crop diversification has also been recommended.<\/p>\n

Agricultural experts believe that if rainfall remains below normal this season, cultivation of short-duration paddy varieties along with pulse and oilseed crops will help minimise risks and improve farm incomes.<\/p>\n

The state government has urged farmers to seek scientific guidance from nearby agricultural colleges, research stations, Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) and Agriculture Department offices whenever required to ensure informed farming decisions during the Kharif season.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
