TFP Bureau, New Delhi, August 1,2026: Coal India Limited (CIL) has introduced a series of comprehensive reforms to strengthen post-retirement welfare, significantly improving pension administration, healthcare services, social security and grievance redressal for more than 4.5 lakh retired employees and pensioners.<\/p>\n
The initiatives, undertaken in collaboration with the Coal Mines Provident Fund Organisation (CMPFO), are aimed at ensuring a smoother transition into retirement while providing greater financial security and improved healthcare support to former employees who have contributed to India’s energy sector.<\/p>\n
One of the major reforms includes the digital transformation of pension administration through the C-CARES platform. The new system has reduced the average settlement time for retirement claims from 30 days to just 10 days. Coal India is also developing additional digital modules that will enable online pension revisions and the issuance of revised Pension Payment Orders (PPOs), creating a seamless and paperless pension management system.<\/p>\n
Under the upgraded system, PPOs and Coal Mines Provident Fund (CMPF) settlements are now issued on the day of retirement, while gratuity payments are released in accordance with statutory provisions. The revised PPO format also incorporates details of eligible spouses, enabling banks to process family pension claims without requiring separate approval from CMPFO in routine cases.<\/p>\n
In a significant social security measure, the minimum pension under the Coal Mines Pension Scheme has been increased to \u20b91,000 per month with effect from March 8, 2024, benefiting nearly 40,000 pensioners and providing enhanced financial support to retired mine workers and their families.<\/p>\n
To improve support services, Coal India has established dedicated Post Retirement Benefit Cells (PRBCs) at its headquarters and subsidiaries. These centres serve as single-window facilitation points to address the needs and grievances of retired employees.<\/p>\n
Healthcare continues to remain a major focus of the company’s welfare programme. Around 1.13 lakh retired employees enrolled under the Contributory Post Retirement Medicare Scheme (CPRMS) are now entitled to cashless treatment at 532 empanelled hospitals across the country. The scheme provides medical coverage of up to \u20b925 lakh for retired executives and \u20b98 lakh for retired non-executives, while treatment expenses for specified critical illnesses are exempt from these financial limits, ensuring comprehensive medical protection during emergencies.<\/p>\n
Reflecting the scale of these welfare measures, provident fund disbursements increased by 19.5 per cent to \u20b913,608.8 crore during FY 2025-26, compared to \u20b911,391.6 crore in the previous financial year. Pension disbursements also rose by 22.9 per cent to \u20b96,427 crore from \u20b95,229.1 crore. Combined PF and pension payments increased by \u20b93,415.1 crore during the year, underscoring Coal India’s continued commitment to strengthening financial security and post-retirement support.<\/p>\n
In addition to pension and healthcare benefits, the company continues to provide retired employees access to its empanelled holiday homes, promoting their well-being and continued engagement.<\/p>\n
