TFP Bureau, Korba, July 31, 2026: Bharat Aluminium Company Limited (BALCO) has strengthened its supply chain infrastructure with the induction of its second Bogie Tank Alumina Powder (BTAP) M-1 (B12) railway rake, a strategic move aimed at supporting the company’s expansion towards one million tonnes per annum (1 MTPA) of aluminium production. The new rake is expected to enhance the efficient transportation of alumina\u2014the primary raw material used in aluminium production\u2014while reinforcing BALCO’s commitment to sustainable and technology-driven logistics.<\/p>\n
The newly inducted rake has been introduced under Indian Railways’ Liberalised Special Freight Train Operator (LSFTO) Scheme, enabling BALCO to increase its reliance on rail transportation for bulk material movement. The initiative is expected to improve logistics efficiency, reduce dependence on road transport, lower operating costs, and ensure uninterrupted supply of alumina to the company’s smelter operations.<\/p>\n
As BALCO scales up its production capacity, the movement of thousands of tonnes of alumina over long distances has become increasingly critical. The additional railway rake is expected to provide greater consistency in raw material supply while strengthening planning and operational reliability across the aluminium value chain.<\/p>\n
The company said the enhanced use of rail transport will also contribute to reducing logistics-related carbon emissions by shifting bulk cargo away from road transport. The move aligns with Vedanta’s broader sustainability roadmap and its commitment to achieving Net Zero Carbon emissions by 2030 through cleaner and more efficient industrial practices.<\/p>\n
BALCO has also integrated the new rake into its digital logistics ecosystem. The system features a 24×7 logistics control tower with GPS-enabled real-time tracking, centralised CCTV surveillance, and continuous operational monitoring. These digital capabilities are expected to improve visibility across the supply chain, enable faster decision-making, and ensure smoother movement of raw materials.<\/p>\n
The company stated that while railway infrastructure often remains behind the scenes, investments such as the new BTAP rake play a crucial role in ensuring uninterrupted production, improving operational efficiency, and supporting long-term industrial growth.
