Textile and handloom training opens avenues of employment and self-employment for women and youth in Jashpur<\/h3>\n

TFP Bureau, Raipur, September 13, 2026: In Gholeng village of Jashpur district, traditional handloom skills are being combined with modern technology and market-oriented training to create new livelihood opportunities for women and youth.<\/p>\n

The initiative, being undertaken at the Livelihood Complex in Gholeng, seeks to turn traditional skills that have largely remained within households and local communities into sustainable sources of income. It is also aimed at strengthening women’s economic participation, providing employable skills to local youth and creating opportunities within the rural economy.<\/p>\n

The initiative is being implemented through a collaborative effort involving the Aditya Birla Group, the district administration, Bihan and the Textile Sector Skill Council.<\/p>\n

Under the Seva Sankalp Abhiyan 2026, the focus is on providing training alongside opportunities for actual production so that the skills acquired by participants can gradually translate into employment and self-employment.<\/p>\n

Training linked with production<\/h3>\n

Around 35 to 40 families traditionally associated with livelihood activities, along with women belonging to self-help groups in Gholeng, are being trained in textile and handloom-related activities.<\/p>\n

The participants are being introduced to modern machinery and production techniques and trained to manufacture fabrics, shawls, sarees and other utility products. Along with technical skills, attention is being given to product design, quality and market requirements.<\/p>\n

The production-oriented approach is intended to ensure that training does not remain limited to classroom instruction. Participants can apply their newly acquired skills to actual production and gradually integrate the activity into their regular livelihoods.<\/p>\n

Traditional skills meet modern technology<\/h3>\n

Jashpur has a rich tradition of tribal culture, handicrafts and local craftsmanship. The initiative in Gholeng seeks to build on this traditional knowledge by introducing modern production techniques and market-oriented skills.<\/p>\n

The emphasis is on developing products that meet contemporary requirements in terms of design and quality while retaining the distinctiveness of local craftsmanship. This could help traditional handloom activities move beyond their cultural significance and become part of a sustainable economic activity.<\/p>\n

Plans to connect locally produced goods with wider markets are also expected to create greater opportunities for artisans and self-help groups.\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Self-help groups at the centre<\/h3>\n

The initiative therefore seeks to link skill development with women’s economic empowerment and, in turn, contribute to strengthening rural livelihoods.<\/p>\n

Focus on local youth<\/h3>\n

Local youth are also being encouraged to participate in textile-sector training. The objective is to equip them with practical skills that can lead to employment or self-employment opportunities in their own region.<\/p>\n

The availability of local livelihood opportunities could help reduce dependence on migration for employment. In the longer term, trained youth may explore production units, self-help group enterprises and other forms of entrepreneurship.<\/p>\n

Building a link between craft and market<\/h3>\n

The Livelihood Complex is being developed with the aim of creating a link between traditional craftsmanship, production and the market.<\/p>\n

For local products to achieve wider acceptance, emphasis is being placed on quality, contemporary designs and understanding consumer demand. Market linkages could provide artisans and producer groups with opportunities to take their products beyond the local area.<\/p>\n

The Gholeng initiative thus illustrates how traditional skills, when supported by modern technology, structured training and market access, can become a foundation for sustainable livelihoods.<\/p>\n

From tradition to self-reliance<\/h3>\n

The initiative is not limited to preserving handloom traditions. Its broader objective is to create economic opportunities from existing skills and provide women and youth with avenues for earning a livelihood.<\/p>\n
