Indian Navy to Commission ‘Ikshak’, Strengthening India’s Hydrographic Survey Capabilities

TFP Bureau, Kochi, November 5, 2025:  In a major boost to India’s maritime strength and self-reliance in shipbuilding, the Indian Navy is set to commission Ikshak, the third vessel of the Survey Vessel (Large) [SVL] class, on November 6 at the Naval Base in Kochi. Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi, Chief of the Naval Staff, will preside over the commissioning ceremony. Once commissioned, Ikshak will be based at the Southern Naval Command and will play a crucial role in enhancing the Navy’s hydrographic survey operations across the Indian Ocean region.

Built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Ltd., Kolkata, Ikshak is a landmark achievement in India’s shipbuilding history, reflecting over 80% indigenous content. The vessel stands as a shining example of the success of the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative and the seamless collaboration between GRSE and Indian Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). Its construction underscores India’s steady progress toward complete self-reliance in defense production.

The name Ikshak—meaning “Guide” in Sanskrit—symbolically captures the vessel’s mission and spirit. Designed to perform extensive coastal and deep-water hydrographic surveys of ports, harbours, navigational channels, and maritime routes, Ikshak will generate crucial data for ensuring safe navigation and enhancing India’s maritime safety infrastructure. Its advanced survey capabilities will also aid the Indian Navy and civil maritime agencies in updating nautical charts, facilitating trade, and strengthening navigational security in the region.

Equipped with cutting-edge hydrographic and oceanographic instruments, Ikshak represents a leap forward in India’s marine survey technology. The ship features a high-resolution multi-beam echo sounder, Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV), Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV), and four Survey Motor Boats (SMBs) for close-inshore and harbor surveys. These systems enable precise mapping of seabeds, detection of underwater obstructions, and environmental monitoring essential for modern naval operations.

In addition to its technical prowess, Ikshak is equipped with a helicopter deck, expanding its operational range and enabling air-sea coordination for rapid deployment and multi-domain missions. The ship’s onboard laboratories and advanced data processing systems allow real-time analysis and transmission of hydrographic information, enhancing the Navy’s ability to conduct complex survey operations efficiently.

The commissioning of Ikshak marks a defining moment in the Indian Navy’s ongoing modernization drive and its commitment to maritime domain awareness. The SVL project, which includes four vessels, is a collaborative endeavor under the “Make in India” program. With Ikshak joining the fleet, the Navy will be better positioned to carry out critical survey missions, update nautical charts, and support disaster response and environmental protection initiatives.

Officials noted that Ikshak’s induction reflects the Navy’s dual focus on technology and sustainability. The ship incorporates advanced design features for energy efficiency, noise reduction, and crew comfort, making it one of the most environmentally friendly survey vessels in its class. Its modern communication systems also ensure seamless coordination with naval and civilian maritime authorities.

As India continues to expand its maritime interests and responsibilities across the Indo-Pacific, the commissioning of Ikshak stands as a proud symbol of national capability and maritime stewardship. With its blend of indigenous technology, advanced instrumentation, and strategic utility, Ikshak will play a vital role in charting the seas, guiding navigation, and safeguarding India’s maritime frontiers.

The addition of Ikshak to the Navy’s hydrographic fleet reinforces India’s position as a regional leader in oceanographic and hydrographic research, aligning with the broader vision of a secure, self-reliant, and prosperous maritime nation.
