New Technologies Boost Voter Participation in Elections
- Information Technology and Mobile Apps Transforming Voter Engagement
TFP Bureau, Raipur, Nov 3, 2023: As Chhattisgarh gears up for upcoming elections, information technology and mobile applications are revolutionizing the voter experience, promoting greater participation and involvement in the electoral process. The Election Commission of India is leading this change by adopting new technologies and digital solutions to enhance accessibility, fairness, and inclusivity in elections.
In an era marked by rapid technological advancements, these innovations are bringing voters closer to the electoral process and empowering them to play an active role. Several key mobile apps are playing a pivotal role in increasing voter engagement during the election process.
Voter Helpline App: This app allows voters to easily locate their assembly and polling booth, and find their serial number on the voter list. By entering their Voter Identity Card (EPIC) number, voters can access this information. Even if they don’t know their EPIC number, voters can search for their names in the voter list by providing details such as name, relative’s name, age, gender, and assembly constituency. Additionally, if a voter’s mobile number is registered, they can download their e-EPIC. It also enables voters to apply for changes, corrections, and other updates to their voter information.
Through the Voter Helpline App, voters can also access comprehensive information about candidates running in their constituency, including details such as their submitted affidavits. On the day of counting, this app offers real-time official information about assembly-wise results, and voters can use it to report election-related complaints. It includes instructional videos about Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) operations for voter awareness.
C-Vigil App: The C-Vigil app empowers citizens to report election-related irregularities directly to the Election Commission. During elections, if a citizen witnesses a violation of the Model Code of Conduct, they can capture photos or videos of the incident and submit them through this app. It serves as a direct channel for reporting incidents like the distribution of money or gifts to voters, inflammatory speeches, unauthorized campaigning, and more.
Saksham Mobile App: Designed to assist disabled voters, this app offers various facilities to help them participate in the electoral process. It features a user-friendly interface with accessibility options such as screen readers and text-to-speech services. Disabled voters can avail services like transportation to polling stations, request assistance, and lodge complaints. The app aims to make elections more inclusive and accessible for all.
Facilitation Candidate App: Candidates can use this app to fill out nomination forms and affidavits online, book time slots for physical verification, and pay required fees. It also provides the option for candidates to seek permission for rallies and meetings.
Voter Turnout App: This app allows citizens to monitor voting information by assembly on election day, offering real-time updates on voter turnout.
Know Your Candidate (KYC) App: KYC provides information about candidates contesting elections, helping voters make informed choices by offering candidate profiles, including education, assets, and criminal records.
Election Seizure Management System (ESMS) App: More than 1600 static and flying squads upload seizure information to this app, helping the Election Commission track actions taken by enforcement agencies.
These mobile apps are shaping a more informed and empowered electorate, allowing voters to actively participate in the democratic process.
