Chhattisgarh Chief Secretary prioritises drinking water in state water allocation

State committee reviews industrial water supply and approves nine drinking water schemes under Mission Amrut 2.0; industries asked to adopt water recycling and conservation measures

TFP Bureau, Raipur, October 9, 2026: Chief Secretary Vikas Sheel on Friday directed officials to give top priority to drinking water supply while balancing the allocation of water for agriculture and industries across Chhattisgarh.

Chairing a meeting of the State Water Resource Utilization Committee at Mantralaya Mahanadi Bhawan, he reviewed annual water allocation and supply to industrial units in various districts, including sponge iron plants, power plants, cement factories and other manufacturing facilities.

The committee also discussed proposals for fresh water allocations and reviewed supplies from reservoirs and rivers to existing industrial units.

Sheel directed the Water Resources Department to ensure adequate storage and supply for irrigation, particularly to meet farmers’ requirements during the upcoming dry season. He stressed that drinking water supplies and agricultural irrigation should not be adversely affected by industrial demand.

Nine drinking water schemes approved

The committee confirmed and approved water allocations for nine drinking water supply schemes under Mission Amrut 2.0 and other programmes. The schemes are expected to strengthen drinking water infrastructure in urban local bodies across the state.

The meeting also discussed the constitution of the State Groundwater Management and Regulation Authority as part of efforts to improve groundwater management.

Industries told to conserve water

The Chief Secretary directed industrial establishments to keep water consumption within sanctioned limits and pay water charges on time.

He also asked industries to adopt Zero Liquid Discharge technology, establish water recycling plants and effectively implement rainwater harvesting systems to conserve water and improve its utilisation.

The meeting was attended by Water Resources Department Secretary Rajesh Sukumar Toppo, Commerce and Industries Department Secretary Rajat Kumar, Public Health Engineering Department Secretary Mohammad Kaiser Abdul Haque, officials of the Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Department, hydrogeologists and other committee members.
