Ministry of Coal confers 5-Star Achievers Prize for 2024-25; recognition highlights the mine’s performance in safety, operational efficiency and environmental management
TFP Bureau, Raipur, November 07,2026: The Parsa East and Kanta Basan (PEKB) opencast coal mine in Chhattisgarh’s Surguja district has secured the prestigious 5-Star Rating and 5-Star Achievers Prize for the 2024-25 financial year, marking the fifth consecutive time it has received the national recognition.
The award was presented by Union Minister of State for Coal and Mines Satish Chandra Dubey at the Star Rating Award Ceremony 2026, held at Mayfair Lake Resort in Raipur on November 2. The recognition acknowledges the mine’s performance in safe, scientific and efficient mining, along with its environmental management practices.
Operated by Parsa Kente Collieries Limited, PEKB is a key source of coal for the thermal power plants of Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (RVUNL). Coal from the mine supports power stations with a combined generation capacity of 4,340 MW, contributing to electricity supply in Rajasthan.
The PEKB mine and the Gare Pelma Sector-III mine, where Adani Natural Resources serves as the Mine Developer and Operator (MDO), have both secured the 5-Star Rating. Across the country, 50 coal mines—15 underground and 35 opencast—received the rating for 2024-25. Five of the award-winning mines are located in Chhattisgarh.
The Ministry of Coal’s star-rating assessment is conducted through an evaluation process involving independent experts and agencies appointed by the Coal Controller’s Organisation. Mines are assessed on several parameters, including production, operational efficiency, technological innovation, health and safety standards, environmental management and community welfare.
At PEKB, the assessment also recognises efforts in environmental conservation, land rehabilitation, biodiversity enhancement and increasing green cover alongside mining operations.
The fifth consecutive recognition places PEKB among the country’s consistently high-performing coal mines and highlights the role of responsible mining practices in balancing energy requirements with environmental and community considerations.
