TFP Bureau, Korba,June 5, 2026: Bharat Aluminium Company Limited (BALCO), a unit of Vedanta Aluminium, marked World Environment Day with the launch of ‘Smriti Udyan’, a unique plantation initiative aimed at preserving cherished memories while promoting biodiversity, environmental sustainability, and community well-being.
The initiative was inaugurated by Mr. R.K. Singh, CEO & Director, BALCO, along with more than 100 participants who planted Amaltas saplings within the township as part of the programme.
Designed as more than just a plantation drive, Smriti Udyan offers a meaningful space where employees, their families, and community members can dedicate trees to loved ones who have enriched their lives through affection, guidance, and inspiration. Each sapling planted under the initiative is envisioned as a living tribute that will grow into a lasting legacy while contributing to cleaner air, ecological balance, and a greener future.
Addressing the gathering, Mr. R.K. Singh, CEO & Director, BALCO, said, “BALCO and Smriti Udyan have celebrated the memories of loved ones through sapling plantation. Each Amaltas sapling planted today carries a personal story and will grow as a living tribute over time. As residents, it is our responsibility to ensure that our habitats are green and healthy, and initiatives such as this not only help keep memories afresh but also inculcate the practice of plantation.”
He emphasized that every plant nurtured under the initiative would become both a cherished memory and a green heritage for future generations.
Envisioned as a long-term programme, Smriti Udyan will continue to connect people, memories, and nature in the years ahead. Employees, their families, and union representatives will be able to plant saplings to commemorate special occasions such as birthdays, wedding anniversaries, personal achievements, and in remembrance of loved ones. Over time, the garden is expected to evolve into a vibrant landscape of stories, memories, and flourishing trees.
As part of the initiative, Amaltas saplings—renowned for their medicinal properties and striking golden-yellow blossoms—have been planted across the designated area. Besides enhancing the township’s beauty, these trees are expected to support biodiversity by attracting pollinators such as bees and butterflies while contributing to ecological sustainability and climate resilience.
The launch of Smriti Udyan is part of BALCO’s broader commitment to environmental stewardship. Over the past three months, the company has planted nearly 4,000 saplings across various green spaces in Balconagar, including 2,000 Bougainvillea and 2,000 Pennsylvania plants, significantly strengthening the township’s green cover.
Balconagar already houses several prominent green spaces, including the Forest Walkway and Nehru Garden. Through sustained plantation efforts and community-driven environmental initiatives, BALCO continues to reinforce its commitment to biodiversity conservation, ecological sustainability, and the creation of a greener, more sustainable future.
