Government cites upcoming elections; extension to remain effective until regular appointment is made or February 2027, whichever is earlier
TFP Bureau, Raipur, June 11,2026: The Chhattisgarh Government has extended the tenure of State Election Commissioner Shri Ajay Singh, a retired IAS officer of the 1983 batch, in view of the forthcoming elections in the state.
According to an order issued by the General Administration Department on Thursday, Shri Singh will continue to serve as the State Election Commissioner until February 2027 or until a regular appointment is made to the post, whichever is earlier.
The extension has been granted under the powers conferred by Clause (2) of Article 243-K of the Constitution of India and in accordance with the provisions of the second proviso to Rule 5 of the Chhattisgarh State Election Commissioner (Conditions of Service) Rules, 2002.
Shri Ajay Singh was appointed as the State Election Commissioner of the Chhattisgarh State Election Commission through a government notification issued on June 1, 2024. His tenure was scheduled to conclude earlier, but the state government decided to continue his services considering the significance of the upcoming electoral process.
Officials said the extension is aimed at ensuring continuity, administrative stability and effective preparedness for elections to local bodies and other institutions that fall under the purview of the State Election Commission.
The General Administration Department formally issued the extension order on June 11, 2026.
The State Election Commission plays a crucial role in conducting and supervising elections to Panchayats, Municipal Corporations, Municipal Councils and other urban local bodies across Chhattisgarh, making continuity in leadership particularly important during an election period.
With the latest decision, Shri Singh will continue to oversee the Commission’s activities and election-related preparations until a regular appointment is made or the extended tenure concludes in February 2027. Click here for the order👇
