Officials Directed to Expedite Construction Through Better Coordination; Stress Laid on Quality, Safety and Timely Completion
TFP Bureau,Raipur, July 24, 2026: The Chhattisgarh Public Works Department (PWD) has directed officials to speed up the construction of jail infrastructure projects across the state while ensuring strict quality standards and adherence to project timelines. The directions were issued during a high-level review meeting chaired by PWD Secretary Mukesh Kumar Bansal at Nirman Bhavan in Raipur.
The meeting was attended by Director General of Prisons and Correctional Services Himanshu Gupta, PWD Engineer-in-Chief V.K. Bhatpahari, Executive Engineers from various PWD divisions, contractors and Jail Superintendents, who participated through video conferencing.
Reviewing the progress of ongoing projects, Bansal assessed the construction status of barracks, boundary walls, toilets and watchtowers in jails across the state. He instructed officials to conduct regular field inspections and closely monitor the pace and quality of work. Contractors were directed to accelerate construction while maintaining high standards in workmanship and the use of quality materials.
The PWD Secretary also instructed Executive Engineers and Jail Superintendents to ensure proper arrangements for transporting construction materials within jail premises while strictly following safety protocols. Jail authorities were asked to provide workers with adequate time to complete their daily assignments to avoid unnecessary delays.
Addressing the meeting, Director General of Prisons and Correctional Services Himanshu Gupta said several prisons in the state are currently operating beyond their sanctioned capacity. He noted that the construction of new barracks and the expansion of existing facilities would help ease overcrowding and improve prison infrastructure. He urged field officials, jail authorities and contractors to work in close coordination to complete the projects within the stipulated timeframe.
During the review, the Secretary assessed the progress of multiple projects, including the construction of a parking shed, classroom shed and visitor facilities with toilets at Raipur Central Jail. He also reviewed the construction of a 1,500-capacity special jail at Nagoi in Bilaspur, boundary walls at the district jails in Dhamtari and Gariaband, and new barracks at district jails in Janjgir, Ramanujganj, Surajpur, Kanker and Sanjari-Balod, besides the Sub-Jail at Sarangarh.
The meeting also reviewed projects involving the raising of the main boundary wall at Kawardha Sub-Jail, construction of barracks and toilets at Ambikapur and Jagdalpur Central Jails, toilets at Dantewada District Jail, installation of concertina wire fencing and watchtowers at Sukma District Jail, and the construction of a watchtower at Bijapur Sub-Jail. Necessary directions were issued to officials to ensure the timely completion of all works.
