Chhattisgarh Marks World Breastfeeding Week with Statewide Awareness Campaign

Health Department promotes early initiation of breastfeeding and exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months to improve maternal and child health

TFP Bureau, Raipur, August 4, 2026: The Chhattisgarh Health Department has launched a week-long awareness campaign across the state to mark World Breastfeeding Week, focusing on the importance of breastfeeding in ensuring a healthy start to every newborn’s life. A series of awareness and counselling programmes are being conducted at hospitals, community and primary health centres, Health and Wellness Centres, and at the grassroots level to educate mothers and families on the benefits of breastfeeding.

As part of the campaign, pregnant women, lactating mothers, and their family members are being sensitised about the scientific and health benefits of timely breastfeeding. Health experts are emphasising that initiating breastfeeding within the first hour after birth and exclusively breastfeeding infants for the first six months provides the strongest foundation for healthy growth and development.

Medical experts highlighted that colostrum—the thick, yellow first milk produced by mothers—is rich in nutrients and antibodies that help protect newborns against infections, strengthen immunity, and reduce the risk of malnutrition. They also recommend continuing breastfeeding up to two years or beyond while introducing age-appropriate complementary foods after six months.

Officials said breastfeeding offers significant health benefits not only for infants but also for mothers. It supports faster post-delivery recovery, lowers the risk of several serious illnesses, and helps strengthen the emotional bond between mother and child.

During the week-long campaign, healthcare institutions are organising counselling sessions, group discussions, health education programmes, interactive question-and-answer sessions, and practical demonstrations on proper breastfeeding techniques. Doctors, staff nurses, Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs), Mitanins, Anganwadi workers, and other frontline health personnel are also addressing common myths and misconceptions related to breastfeeding while providing guidance on newborn care.

The Health Department has stressed that successful breastfeeding requires the support of the entire family rather than being viewed solely as the mother’s responsibility. Officials said that a supportive home environment, accurate information, and active community participation are essential for improving maternal and child health outcomes.

Through the campaign, the department aims to strengthen awareness, encourage healthy infant feeding practices, and contribute towards building a healthier, malnutrition-free society across Chhattisgarh.
