Around 104 km of the Raipur-Dhanbad Economic Corridor to pass through Jashpur district; project expected to improve access to Raipur, Bilaspur, Korba and Jharkhand, opening opportunities in agriculture, tourism and employment
TFP Bureau, Raipur, October 23, 2026: Road connectivity in Chhattisgarh’s Jashpur district is set for a major upgrade with the development of the Raipur-Dhanbad Economic Corridor under the Centre’s Bharatmala project. The approximately ₹3,147-crore road project is expected to strengthen links between the district, the state capital and key economic centres in neighbouring regions.
The corridor, spanning around 707 km, will include approximately 104 km of four-lane highway through Jashpur district. The project is expected to improve connectivity for Jashpur, Pathalgaon and surrounding areas, while facilitating travel towards Raipur, Bilaspur, Korba and neighbouring Jharkhand.
Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai has emphasised infrastructure development as a key component of the state’s efforts to improve connectivity and expand economic opportunities in remote and tribal regions.
Travel time to Raipur expected to fall
One of the anticipated benefits of the corridor is a reduction in travel time between Jashpur and Raipur. According to project-related estimates cited in the announcement, travel time could fall substantially from the current journey of around 14 hours to approximately eight to nine hours, with the possibility of reaching the capital in five to six hours as connectivity improves.
Actual journey times will depend on the completed route, road conditions, traffic and the operational status of the project.
Improved road access is also expected to make travel to major cities easier for residents seeking healthcare, higher education, business opportunities and government services.
Better market access for farmers and local businesses
The corridor is expected to support agricultural trade by enabling farmers to transport vegetables, horticultural produce and other goods to larger markets more efficiently. Reduced travel time could help improve supply chains and benefit farmers, traders and transport operators.
Jashpur has economic potential in agriculture, forest produce, handicrafts and rural livelihood activities. Improved connectivity could help local enterprises reach wider markets, encourage new businesses and create employment opportunities linked to transport, logistics and commerce.
Tourism expected to gain from improved connectivity
Known for its waterfalls, hills, religious sites and tribal cultural heritage, Jashpur has considerable tourism potential. Better road access could make destinations such as Mayali Nature Camp, Madheshwar Mountain, Ranidah Waterfall and Kailash Cave easier to reach.
An increase in visitors could benefit hotels, homestays, local transport operators, food businesses and handicraft sellers. These activities could create additional livelihood opportunities for local communities, particularly young people and rural entrepreneurs.
Modern road infrastructure and wildlife considerations
The corridor is expected to incorporate modern infrastructure, including underpasses and vehicular underpasses to facilitate traffic movement. Structures designed to support wildlife movement are also envisaged, with the aim of addressing environmental concerns along the route.
Such infrastructure is intended to improve traffic flow and make long-distance passenger and freight movement more efficient, while providing appropriate passage for local traffic.
Rail and rural road connectivity also on the agenda
Alongside highway development, the state is pursuing improvements to other transport links in and around Jashpur. Road construction and upgrades are being undertaken through schemes such as the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana and state highway programmes.
The proposed Lohardaga-Dharamjaygarh railway line has also been cited as a potential future connectivity project, with its approval reported as having been published in the Gazette of India. If implemented, the rail link could provide an additional transport option for Jashpur and nearby areas.
Together, improvements in road and rail infrastructure are expected to strengthen access to markets, public services and regional economic centres.
Infrastructure push targets remote and tribal areas
The Raipur-Dhanbad Economic Corridor forms part of a broader infrastructure development effort aimed at improving connectivity in Jashpur’s remote rural and tribal areas. Road, bridge and culvert projects are also being advanced to improve access within the district.
Once completed, the corridor could help integrate Jashpur more closely with Chhattisgarh’s major urban and industrial centres and neighbouring states. The scale of its eventual economic impact will depend on timely completion, effective local connections and the extent to which farmers, businesses and tourism operators can benefit from the improved network.
