Teacher Shortage in Rural Schools Hits Exam Results in Rajnandgaon and Durg Districts

TFP Bureau, Raipur, May 31, 2025: Educational outcomes in rural government schools of Rajnandgaon and Durg districts are suffering due to a severe shortage of teachers, while urban schools have a surplus. Reports from the respective District Education Officers highlight that this imbalance is adversely affecting exam results and overall education quality in rural areas, prompting urgent calls for rationalization of teacher postings.

In Rajnandgaon district, the government higher secondary school in Ghotiya village (Dongargarh block) has only 3 lecturers working against 11 sanctioned posts, despite having 103 students enrolled in Classes 10 and 12. This shortage has contributed to a worrying pass percentage of just 27.27% in the Class 10 exam and 66.66% in Class 12 for the academic year 2024-25. Meanwhile, urban schools like Thakur Pyarelal Government Pre-Secondary School have 10 teachers for only 84 students, reflecting an uneven distribution of teaching staff.

Similarly, in Durg district, rural government high schools such as Murmuda, Silitara, and Birejhar face critical shortages. Murmuda’s high school has 3 lecturers against 6 sanctioned posts for 63 Class 10 students, with a pass rate of 47.62%. Silitara and Birejhar schools have no lecturers despite sanctioned posts and recorded dismal exam results of 36.59% and 35% respectively. Contrastingly, urban schools like Government Pre Madhyamik School Camp-1 Milai and Nehru Government Primary School in Durg have significantly more teachers than required—17 teachers against 7 posts and 11 teachers against 4 posts respectively.

District Education Officers from both regions stress the urgent need for rationalizing teacher deployment to ensure subject experts are available where student strength demands it. This would optimize the use of limited resources and improve educational standards and examination outcomes, especially in rural schools.

The education departments of Rajnandgaon and Durg have been urged to take immediate action to redistribute teaching staff effectively and strengthen the learning environment for rural students.
