BALCO Reinforces Workplace Safety with Technology and Training Initiatives

TFP Bureau, Korba, June 16, 2025: Bharat Aluminium Company Limited (BALCO) has taken significant strides in reinforcing its commitment to workplace safety through digitization, enhanced safety protocols, and awareness-building initiatives. The aluminium major is fostering a culture of responsibility and vigilance among employees and transport partners as part of its zero-loss safety philosophy.

Monthly safety discussions and awareness programs are being conducted across BALCO’s plant premises to deepen the culture of safety. Cutting-edge technologies including AI-powered monitoring systems and digital safety dashboards are enabling the company to identify potential risks in real-time and ensure compliance with safety protocols.

In line with its vision of industrial development coupled with employee well-being, BALCO has organized several training sessions and seminars focused on road safety. These sessions saw the participation of over 50 transport partners involved in coal and ash transportation within the plant. Participants were educated about critical road safety practices and were encouraged to strictly follow safety guidelines.

A major milestone in BALCO’s safety framework is the launch of the ISO 39001 Road Traffic Safety Management System (RTS), aimed at enhancing transport safety at every level. As part of this initiative, focused training was imparted on legal compliance, identification of transport-related risks, and adoption of best practices. In addition, Incident Investigation Training sessions were conducted to help participants understand the root causes of potential workplace incidents and implement preventive measures.

The company has embraced digital transformation to boost workplace safety and operational efficiency. Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) training modules have been introduced in high-risk areas like the potline, allowing employees to safely rehearse complex tasks. Real-time dashboards and automated tracking systems now manage material movement and cast house operations, ensuring transparency and minimizing errors.

AI has been a game-changer in enhancing both product quality and operational safety. In BALCO’s anode manufacturing process, robot-based AI systems assess furnace refractory structures for wear and damage, leading to improved anode quality and safer operations. At the 1200 MW power plant, an AI-enabled conveyor belt monitoring system is in place to conduct real-time health checks, detect fire hazards, and identify human presence, thereby preventing accidents.

BALCO has also digitalized 62 critical processes, replacing manual tasks with real-time data analysis to optimize resource use and enhance decision-making. This digital integration ensures a balanced interaction between human expertise and machine intelligence, reinforcing safety and sustainability.

Through these wide-ranging initiatives, BALCO continues to strengthen its position as a technology-driven and safety-conscious leader in the aluminium industry—paving the way for safer, smarter and more sustainable industrial operations.
