BALCO Boosts Smart Farming with Automated Weather and Water Station

TFP Bureau, Korba, July 15, 2025: In a significant push towards sustainable and technology-driven agriculture, Bharat Aluminium Company Limited (BALCO), a part of Vedanta Aluminium, has installed an Automated Weather and Water Station (AWWS) under its flagship CSR initiative Mor Jal Mor Maati. The smart farming solution, currently in its pilot phase, is already serving over 200 farmers in villages within a five-kilometre radius and is set to expand in the coming months.

Aligned with the Government of India’s Digital India mission, the AWWS aims to bridge the digital divide in rural farming communities by offering real-time, hyperlocal agri-intelligence. The initiative not only strengthens digital infrastructure at the grassroots level but also brings modern agricultural technologies directly to the hands of small and marginal farmers.

By integrating weather forecasting with agronomic advisories, the AWWS provides critical data on irrigation scheduling, sowing and harvesting timelines, pest and disease forecasts, and soil moisture levels. This real-time information is delivered through Gram Vikas Samitis, WhatsApp groups, and local awareness campaigns—enabling farmers to make timely, data-driven decisions. The initiative is designed to help reduce input costs, protect yields, and build climate resilience.

“Technology is a powerful enabler—both in driving industrial excellence and empowering rural communities,” said Rajesh Kumar, CEO & Director, BALCO. “With the AWWS under our Mor Jal Mor Maati project, we are bringing precision agriculture to the grassroots and helping build future-ready, resilient farming systems.”

The Mor Jal Mor Maati initiative is a comprehensive rural development program aimed at transforming agricultural livelihoods. It focuses on maximizing existing water resources, enhancing irrigation, promoting multi-cropping, and introducing allied activities like lac cultivation, horticulture, animal husbandry, and non-timber forest produce. The establishment of the Vedanta Agriculture & Resource Centre under the project further supports these efforts through training and input distribution.

To date, the project has positively impacted over 5,700 farmers, offering sustainable agricultural solutions and year-round income generation opportunities. With the AWWS now operational, BALCO is taking a major leap in promoting smart farming practices, reinforcing its commitment to inclusive, tech-enabled rural development.
