TFP Bureau, New Delhi, October 7, 2025: The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana has achieved a major milestone in its mission to promote clean, affordable, and self-sustaining solar energy for Indian households. As of September 2025, Public Sector Banks (PSBs) have sanctioned over 5.79 lakh loan applications amounting to ₹10,907 crore, significantly boosting financial support for rooftop solar installations across the country.
Implemented through the Jan Samarth Portal, integrated with the National Portal for PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana (pmsuryaghar.gov.in), the initiative ensures a seamless, fully digital loan process — from application to disbursement. Beneficiaries can access collateral-free loans at lower interest rates with flexible repayment terms, enabling wider participation in the government’s push toward renewable energy adoption.
Under the model loan scheme, applicants can avail loans up to ₹2 lakh without collateral and enjoy a six-month repayment moratorium after disbursement. The financing terms are designed to align repayment with the savings generated from reduced electricity costs, making the scheme both affordable and sustainable for consumers.
In response to user feedback and to further expand the reach of the scheme, several enhancements have been introduced. These include allowing co-applicants to improve eligibility, removing capacity-based restrictions on rooftop solar systems, and simplifying documentation requirements. These measures have collectively made the scheme more inclusive and accessible to a larger number of households.
The Department of Financial Services (DFS), in close coordination with the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), is continuously monitoring the scheme’s progress. Regular reviews are conducted through State Level Bankers’ Committees and Lead District Managers to ensure smoother credit delivery, faster adoption, and stronger outreach, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas.
Officials noted that the growing number of sanctioned loans reflects the success of digital integration and financial facilitation mechanisms under the scheme. The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana has become a cornerstone of India’s renewable energy mission, aligning with the nation’s vision of “energy independence” and “green growth” while empowering citizens to generate their own electricity and reduce reliance on conventional power sources.
The government aims to continue strengthening institutional partnerships and simplifying financial access to make rooftop solar systems a household reality across India.
