CM Vishnu Deo Sai Reviews Madhya Pradesh’s ‘Pressure Irrigation Network’ Technology

TFP Bureau, Raipur, December 7, 2025: Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai on Sunday reviewed a detailed presentation in Bhopal on the Pressure Irrigation Network (PIN) system, an advanced and highly efficient irrigation model currently operational in Madhya Pradesh. The presentation was delivered by Rajesh Rajora, Additional Chief Secretary, Water Resources Department, Madhya Pradesh.

Describing the technology as modern, efficient and aligned with water conservation priorities, the Chief Minister said that Chhattisgarh would work to adopt the system extensively. He stated that the model would help farmers receive reliable irrigation with less water and improved productivity, while also supporting long-term goals of energy saving and cost-effective project execution.

During the briefing, officials highlighted that traditional canal-based irrigation systems have an efficiency of around 35 per cent, whereas the PIN system delivers nearly 65 per cent efficiency. Water is supplied through pressure-based underground pipelines, which drastically reduce leakage, seepage and evaporation losses. The system also requires minimal land acquisition, enabling quicker and more economical completion of irrigation projects.

In Madhya Pradesh, irrigation through the PIN model has already been extended to about 13 lakh hectares, with expansion plans for up to 40 lakh hectares. Officials noted that the system ensures uniform water distribution, enhances crop productivity and offers significant convenience to farmers.

The Chief Minister observed that the PIN model allows irrigation benefits to be extended even without land acquisition, making it particularly suitable for regions where canal expansion is difficult. He directed officials to study, test and implement the system in phases across Chhattisgarh.

Experts further explained that in traditional canal systems, a large share of water is lost due to seepage, evaporation and uncontrolled flow, leading to uneven supply, especially to tail-end farms. In contrast, the PIN system delivers controlled, pressure-based piped water directly to fields, ensuring near-zero wastage and better pumping efficiency, resulting in substantial electricity savings. This method supports higher crop output, improved water management and increased farm income.

The review meeting was attended by Subodh Singh, Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh; Vinod Devda, Chief Engineer of the Madhya Pradesh Water Resources Department; and Superintending Engineers Vikas Rajoriya and Shubhankar Biswas.
