Vedanta Chairman Anil Agarwal’s Son Agnivash Dies at 49

TFP Bureau, New Delhi/Raipur, January 7, 2026: Agnivash Agarwal, son of Vedanta Group Chairman Anil Agarwal, passed away on Tuesday at the age of 49, triggering an outpouring of grief across the industrial fraternity and among well-wishers in India and abroad. The Vedanta Group founder shared the tragic news through an emotional message, describing the loss as the most painful moment of his life.

According to Anil Agarwal, Agnivash was recovering at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York following a skiing accident in the United States when he suffered a sudden cardiac arrest. “We thought the worst was over, but fate had other plans,” Agarwal wrote, expressing disbelief and profound sorrow at his son’s untimely demise.

Recalling his son’s life, the Vedanta Chairman said Agnivash was born on June 3, 1976, in Patna into a middle-class family and grew up as a cheerful, playful and compassionate child. “Always smiling, always laughing, he was a true friend and deeply protective of his sister,” he said. Agnivash studied at Mayo College, Ajmer, where he displayed leadership qualities and a strong personality.

Agnivash was known for his diverse talents and interests. He was a boxing champion, an avid horse-riding enthusiast and a gifted musician. In his professional life, he played a significant role in the business world, building enterprises such as Fujairah Gold and later serving as Chairman of Hindustan Zinc. Despite his achievements, Agarwal noted that his son remained grounded, simple and approachable, forging friendships wherever he went.

“Kiran and I are devastated,” Agarwal wrote, referring to his wife. “We are still trying to come to terms with the fact that our son is gone.” He added that the Vedanta family considers all employees of the group as their own children, reflecting Agnivash’s inclusive and people-centric outlook.

Sharing a deeply personal reflection, Anil Agarwal said he and his son shared a common dream of a self-reliant India. “Agni always asked, ‘What do we lack in our country? Why should we lag behind anyone?’” Agarwal said. He reiterated the family’s commitment to social causes, including eradicating hunger, ensuring education for every child, empowering women and generating employment opportunities for youth.

The Vedanta Chairman also reaffirmed a promise he had made to his son to dedicate more than 75 per cent of the family’s wealth to social work. “Today, I reiterate that promise. I will live an even simpler life and dedicate myself fully to this cause,” he said, adding that he would strive to fulfil Agnivash’s unfinished dreams.

Agnivash is survived by his wife, children and grieving parents. News of his passing has cast a pall of gloom over the corporate sector, with condolence messages pouring in from industry leaders, employees, friends and admirers. In Chhattisgarh’s Korba district, closely associated with Vedanta’s operations, a wave of mourning has been reported as people remember Agnivash for his humility, vision and humane values.
