Raipur to Be Developed as a Metro City: CM Vishnudev Sai

TFP Bureau, Raipur, January 13, 2026: Chief Minister Shri Vishnudev Sai on Tuesday reiterated the state government’s firm commitment to develop Raipur on the lines of a modern metro city, assuring that there would be no shortage of funds for the capital’s comprehensive development. Chairing a high-level review meeting at the Mahanadi Bhavan Secretariat on the overall development of Raipur city and its surrounding areas, the Chief Minister said the government is determined to create a well-planned, citizen-friendly and future-ready capital in line with public aspirations and growing urban needs.

Addressing senior officials and public representatives, Shri Sai said Raipur is witnessing rapid urbanisation, resulting in increasing pressure on traffic, housing, water supply, sanitation and civic services. “Keeping this in view, development must be guided by concrete and practical short-term and long-term planning so that the city’s infrastructure can cater to the needs of the coming decades,” he said.

The Chief Minister informed that urban local bodies have been allocated two-and-a-half times more financial resources for infrastructure development compared to earlier years. This enhanced funding, he said, will enable quality execution of projects and timely completion of development works across the capital region.

Shri Sai stressed that the holistic development of Raipur is possible only through effective coordination among key agencies, including the Municipal Corporation, Railways and the Public Works Department. He instructed officials to ensure seamless inter-departmental coordination, remove procedural bottlenecks and significantly accelerate the pace of development works. He also directed that issues raised by local public representatives at the ground level be accorded priority and incorporated into actionable plans.

During the meeting, extensive discussions were held on strengthening basic civic amenities such as road connectivity, drinking water supply, electricity, sanitation, healthcare, education, employment opportunities and communication infrastructure. Detailed reviews were conducted on the city’s drainage system, traffic congestion at major intersections, encroachments, and the resale and utilisation of vacant shops in municipal commercial complexes.

The Chief Minister also reviewed the status of health infrastructure in the city, including the upgradation of facilities at Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar Memorial Hospital (Mekahara Medical College). Emphasis was laid on improving sanitation services, expanding water treatment plants, strengthening the sewerage network, maintaining sports grounds, and expediting slum redevelopment schemes to enhance the overall quality of urban life.

Looking ahead, Shri Sai issued clear directives regarding proposed long-term projects such as underground power cabling, construction of new roads and flyovers, development of public buildings, stadiums and other urban facilities, keeping future population growth and traffic requirements in mind. He instructed all concerned departments to promptly submit detailed proposals to the Chief Secretary’s office and ensure that infrastructure-related works are completed within stipulated timelines.

“Raipur must emerge as a modern, well-organised and liveable capital city, equipped with world-class infrastructure and services,” the Chief Minister said, adding that disciplined planning and timely execution would be the key to achieving this goal.

The meeting was attended by Deputy Chief Minister Shri Arun Sao, Forest Minister Shri Kedar Kashyap, Finance Minister Shri O.P. Choudhary, Skill Development Minister Shri Khushwant Saheb, Member of Parliament Shri Brijmohan Agrawal, Raipur South MLA Shri Sunil Soni, senior public representatives including Shri Purandar Mishra, Shri Rajesh Munat, Shri Motilal Sahu, Shri Anuj Sharma and Shri Indra Kumar Sahu, Raipur Mayor Mrs. Meenal Choubey, Chief Secretary Shri Vikas Sheel, Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister Shri Subodh Kumar Singh, and other senior administrative officials.
