Public hearing scheduled today as Adani Group plans 1,600 MW ultra-supercritical units in third phase; total capacity to rise to 3,520 MW
TFP Bureau, Korba, February 27, 2026:
The proposed expansion of Korba Power Limited, operated by the Adani Group, is set to provide large-scale employment and significantly strengthen the economy of Chhattisgarh. A public hearing is scheduled for February 27 as part of the environmental clearance process for the installation of 1,600 megawatt (MW) power generation units under the project’s third phase.
Located along the Korba–Champa route in Korba district, the power project is emerging as one of the major industrial investments in the region. The company was earlier known as Lanco Amarkantak Power Limited and was renamed Korba Power Limited after its acquisition by Adani Power Limited. Following the takeover, Adani Power not only revived and accelerated the stalled second phase of the project but also proposed an ambitious third phase of expansion.
At present, Korba Power Limited, situated in village Patadhi of Korba district, has an operational capacity of 600 MW. Work on the second phase of the expansion is progressing rapidly. Under this phase, two additional units—Unit 3 and Unit 4—each with a capacity of 660 MW, are being installed. While Unit 3 was initially scheduled for commissioning in March 2026, officials have indicated a slight delay, with commissioning now expected between April and May. Unit 4 is expected to follow soon thereafter.
Simultaneously, preparations for the third phase have gathered momentum. Under this phase, the company plans to install two new units—Units 5 and 6—each with a capacity of 800 MW, within the existing Korba Power Limited campus. Both units will be based on advanced ultra-supercritical technology, aimed at improving efficiency and reducing emissions.
Significantly, no additional land acquisition will be required for the third phase, as the company already possesses 505.58 hectares of land. The estimated investment for this phase stands at ₹16,611 crore, making it one of the largest power-sector investments in the state.
According to company projections, the construction phase of the third expansion will generate employment for around 5,598 people, including 230 permanent employees and 5,368 contract workers. During the operational phase, the project is expected to provide jobs to around 270 permanent staff and nearly 2,000 contract workers. The employment generation is expected to have a cascading effect on local businesses, transport, services and ancillary industries.
Once the third phase is completed, the total power generation capacity of Korba Power Limited will rise to 3,520 MW. Officials said the expansion will not only enhance the district’s industrial profile but also lead to increased revenue for both the district administration and the state government, thereby strengthening the regional economy.
Sources further indicated that there are long-term plans to establish additional units—Units 6 and 7—with a combined capacity of 1,600 MW, which would further consolidate Korba’s position as a major power generation hub in central India.
