CM Vishnu Deo Sai says new law will ensure transparency, protect cultural identity and strengthen social harmony
TFP Bureau, Raipur, March 20, 2026: Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai on Thursday termed the passage of the Freedom of Religion Bill 2026 by the Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly as a significant step towards preserving cultural identity and maintaining social harmony in the state.
Extending greetings on Hindu New Year and Chaitra Navratri, the Chief Minister prayed to Goddess Durga for peace, prosperity and well-being of the people of Chhattisgarh.
Law Aims to Check Illegal Conversions
Sai said incidents of religious conversions carried out through inducement, coercion or misinformation—particularly targeting vulnerable sections—have been a matter of concern and have impacted social harmony. He stated that the new legislation is designed to effectively curb such practices and restore balance and trust within society.
According to the Chief Minister, the law mandates that any religious conversion must follow a transparent and lawful process. This includes prior intimation to the designated authority, issuance of public notice and scrutiny within a specified time frame to ensure that conversions are carried out without force or undue influence.
Stricter Provisions and Penal Measures
Highlighting the need for stronger legal safeguards, Sai said the earlier law was not sufficiently effective in preventing unlawful conversions. The new bill, he noted, incorporates stricter penal provisions that will enable authorities to take decisive action against offenders.
He added that unchecked or illegal conversions could lead to social imbalance and unrest, and the new framework is aimed at safeguarding peace, communal harmony and cultural values across the state.
Tribute to Dilip Singh Judeo
The Chief Minister also paid tribute to late Dilip Singh Judeo, recalling his campaign against religious conversions and stating that his efforts continue to inspire awareness in society.
Sai emphasised that while legislation is important, long-term change will depend on increased public awareness and active participation of citizens in upholding social harmony.
Focus on Unity and Cultural Preservation
Expressing confidence in the new law, the Chief Minister said it would promote transparency and justice while strengthening unity among communities. He added that the legislation would contribute to building a socially balanced and culturally rich Chhattisgarh.
The passage of the Freedom of Religion Bill 2026 is being seen as a key legislative move by the state government, with officials asserting that it will reinforce governance mechanisms while addressing concerns related to unlawful religious conversions.
