30 women take charge of critical smelter operations; move seen as milestone in gender inclusion and technological empowerment
TFP Bureau, Balconagar, March 19,2026: In a significant step towards promoting gender inclusivity in heavy industry, Bharat Aluminium Company Limited, a unit of Vedanta Group, has for the first time deployed women as crane pilots at its advanced aluminium smelter in Balconagar.
A total of 30 women have been inducted into key operational roles, including 10 Beam-Raising Operators and 20 PTM (Pot Tending Machine) Pilots. The initiative coincides with BALCO’s entry into the “Million Ton Club,” marking a major production milestone for the company.
Women Take Charge of Critical Operations
The newly deployed women professionals have undergone rigorous training, including simulator-based learning and extensive on-the-job exposure. They are now independently handling critical pot room operations such as anode changing, molten aluminium tapping, covering processes and beam-raising activities.
Officials said these functions are essential for maintaining the stability and efficiency of electrolytic reduction cells, which form the core of aluminium production. Notably, beam-raising operations across all potlines are now being managed entirely by women, with a dedicated female in-charge assigned to each pot room.
Leadership Push for Inclusion
Commenting on the initiative, CEO and Director Rajesh Kumar said the move reflects a broader shift towards building a more inclusive and future-ready industrial workforce.
“The deployment of female crane pilots is not just an operational milestone but a transformative step in our approach. By ensuring access to advanced technology, structured training and equal opportunities, we are enabling our workforce to realise its full potential,” he said.
He added that as BALCO achieves the milestone of producing one million tonnes, the focus remains on creating a high-performing, equitable workplace aligned with global standards.
Women Employees Share Experience
Sharing her experience, PTM Pilot Naz Fatima described the role as both challenging and rewarding. She said the company’s trust and investment in employee development has empowered women to take on responsibilities traditionally dominated by men.
“It is a matter of pride that our work directly contributes to BALCO’s growth while also paving the way for more women to enter the industrial sector,” she said.
Broader Diversity Initiatives
The company has also taken steps towards broader inclusion by integrating transgender professionals into its core operations since 2022. Initially engaged in roles such as forklift operations and security services, their participation has gradually expanded within the plant ecosystem.
BALCO has introduced progressive measures including 30 days of paid leave and financial assistance under gender re-affirmation policies, positioning itself among the early adopters of inclusive practices in the manufacturing sector in Chhattisgarh.
A Shift in Industrial Workforce Trends
Industry observers note that such initiatives signal a changing landscape in traditionally male-dominated sectors like metals and mining. By actively promoting diversity and inclusion, companies are not only addressing workforce gaps but also fostering innovation and resilience.
BALCO’s latest move is being seen as a landmark effort in redefining workplace norms, with a focus on empowering women and underrepresented groups while strengthening operational efficiency in one of India’s most advanced aluminium production facilities.
