Indian Railways Approves ₹175-Crore Project to Expand Electric Locomotive Maintenance Facility in Raipur

Additional homing infrastructure for 250 electric locomotives to enhance maintenance capacity, support fleet expansion and improve operational efficiency

TFP Bureau, Raipur/New Delhi, July 10,2026: Indian Railways has approved a ₹175-crore project to develop additional homing facilities for 250 three-phase electric locomotives at the High Horse Power (HHP) diesel shed in Raipur under the South East Central Railway (SECR) zone.

The project is aimed at strengthening the railway’s locomotive maintenance infrastructure while supporting the rapid expansion of its electric locomotive fleet and increasing freight and passenger operations across the network.

In railway terminology, a “homing” facility refers to the assignment of a locomotive to a designated shed that serves as its primary maintenance base. Such facilities are responsible for scheduled maintenance, safety inspections, repairs and overall upkeep, ensuring the safe and efficient operation of locomotives.

According to the Ministry of Railways, the project has been sanctioned as part of Indian Railways’ strategy to modernise maintenance infrastructure in line with the growing adoption of electric traction across the country.

The additional homing facilities at Raipur will enable South East Central Railway to optimise the utilisation of existing infrastructure at the depot while creating capacity to accommodate future additions to the electric locomotive fleet. The upgraded facility is also expected to improve maintenance efficiency, operational reliability and overall asset management.

Officials said the project will play an important role in supporting the continued growth of rail freight and passenger services while strengthening Raipur’s position as a key maintenance hub in the South East Central Railway network.
