Parbhani–Mudkhed section to be upgraded to advanced 2×25 kV electric traction system, boosting freight capacity and enabling smoother operation of Vande Bharat trains
TFP Bureau, New Delhi, July 28, 2026: Indian Railways has approved a ₹163 crore project to upgrade the electric traction system on the Parbhani–Mudkhed double-line section in the Nanded Division of South Central Railway. The infrastructure upgrade is aimed at enhancing network capacity, improving operational efficiency, and supporting the movement of higher freight traffic as well as Vande Bharat Express trains.
The project involves converting the existing 1×25 kV electric traction system to a modern 2×25 kV traction system across 164 track kilometres. The work will also include the installation of upgraded power supply infrastructure to meet the increased electrical demand and ensure reliable train operations.
The Parbhani–Mudkhed section is part of the strategically important Highly Utilised Network (HUN) Route-9, which connects Ajmer, Indore, Khandwa, Akola, Purna, Mudkhed, Secunderabad, Mahbubnagar, and Dhone. The corridor plays a vital role in freight and passenger transportation across central and southern India.
According to Indian Railways, the upgraded traction system will significantly strengthen power supply for train operations, allowing the route to handle heavier freight movement while facilitating the operation of faster and more efficient Vande Bharat Express services.
The project is also expected to contribute to Indian Railways’ long-term target of achieving 3,000 million tonnes of freight loading by 2029-30 through enhanced capacity on high-density rail corridors.
The sanction of the project reflects Indian Railways’ continued focus on modernising its electrical infrastructure, improving operational reliability, and strengthening the country’s railway network to meet future transportation demands.
