Official Data Shows Sharp Decline in Power Consumption, Dispels Smart Meter Misconceptions

Raipur city’s electricity consumption drops nearly 32% in July; consumers using over 400 units reduced by half as seasonal factors, energy conservation and relief scheme influence usage

TFP Bureau, Raipur, August 2: Official electricity consumption data released for the Raipur City Region has indicated a sharp decline in power usage during July 2026, with authorities stating that the figures challenge misconceptions surrounding the installation of smart meters.

According to an analysis of electricity consumption for June and July 2026, total power consumption in the city region declined from 131.27 million units (MU) in June to 89.38 million units in July, registering a month-on-month decrease of 31.91 percent.

The data also shows a substantial reduction in the number of high-consumption electricity users. Consumers recording monthly usage above 600 units declined by 64.23 percent, while electricity consumption within this category dropped by 38.13 percent. Similarly, the number of consumers in the 401–600 unit slab fell by 33.99 percent, accompanied by a 32.58 percent reduction in electricity consumption.

Officials attributed the trend to a combination of seasonal changes, increased awareness of energy conservation and the impact of the state government’s “Half Electricity Bill” scheme.

The analysis revealed that the number of consumers using up to 400 units of electricity increased from 196,777 in June to 256,471 in July, reflecting a rise of 30.34 percent. At the same time, consumers with monthly consumption exceeding 400 units declined from 120,615 to 60,921—nearly a 50 percent reduction. Officials said the figures suggest that many households consciously managed their electricity usage to remain within the 400-unit threshold and avail themselves of benefits under the government’s subsidy scheme.

Further data showed that the number of consumers in the 0–100 unit category increased by 53.12 percent, while those in the 101–200 unit slab rose by 51.79 percent during the period.

Energy Department officials said the decline in electricity demand coincided with the end of the summer season, when the use of cooling appliances such as air conditioners and coolers naturally decreases. They added that growing public awareness about energy conservation has also contributed to lower electricity consumption.

Based on the official analysis, the department maintained that the available data does not support various misconceptions circulating regarding smart meters. Officials said the consumption pattern indicates that seasonal conditions, responsible electricity usage and the state’s welfare initiatives have been the primary factors behind the observed reduction in power demand, rather than the metering technology itself.
