Solar Power Lights Up Lives of Baiga Families in Remote Chhattisgarh Village

TFP Bureau, Raipur, April 10, 2025:  In a heartening transformation, the once-dark homes of 25 Baiga tribal families in the remote village of Patpri in Kabirdham district are now lit with solar-powered electricity, thanks to the Pradhan Mantri Janman Yojana. This initiative, executed by the Chhattisgarh Renewable Energy Development Agency (CREDA), has brought clean, renewable energy to a region where electricity access was once just a dream.

Located around 80 km from the district headquarters and 40 km from Pandaria block, Patpri village has become a symbol of hope and development. Under the scheme, each household received a 300-watt solar system worth Rs 65,000 — provided entirely free of cost. The move has not only brightened homes but has also brought new aspirations to the community.

“There is no darkness in our homes now,” said Phool Singh, a local resident. “Our children can study even at night. Life has changed for the better.” Jagatin Bai Baiga, another beneficiary, expressed her joy and recalled her special trip to Delhi where she had the honour of meeting President Droupadi Murmu as a representative of the Janman Yojana.

Holistic Development in Focus

Beyond solar power, the Janman Yojana has facilitated access to clean drinking water with the installation of two hand pumps in the village. Basic identity documents like Aadhaar and ration cards have been issued to all families. The government has also ensured regular health check-ups by deploying mobile health workers to the village.

The Baiga families, primarily dependent on agriculture on leased forest land, also supplement their income through seasonal labour — particularly during the sugarcane harvest — and the collection of minor forest produce.

The implementation of the Janman Yojana in Patpri marks a significant step toward inclusive development, ensuring that even the most remote tribal communities benefit from essential services and opportunities for a better future.
