Higher Education Department expands admission window for vacant seats; Minister Tank Ram Verma says decision aimed at preventing students from losing an academic year
TFP Bureau, Raipur, August 16, 2026: The Chhattisgarh government has extended the deadline for admissions to colleges for the 2026-27 academic session, providing relief to thousands of students who could not secure admission within the earlier schedule.
Under the revised decision of the Higher Education Department, students can now seek admission until August 31, 2026, in government and private colleges across the state where seats remain vacant. A formal order to this effect has been issued by the department.
Higher Education Minister Tank Ram Verma said the decision had been taken keeping the interests of students at the forefront.
“The fundamental objective of the government is to take the light of education to the last person in the state,” Verma said, adding that many meritorious students from remote and rural areas had been unable to complete the admission process on time due to practical difficulties.
He said the government did not want any deserving student to lose an academic year or be deprived of higher education merely because of scheduling constraints. The minister urged eligible students to take advantage of the extended admission window.
Vacant seats prompt extension
According to the department, the earlier admission schedule had fixed July 31 as the deadline for admissions at the principal’s level, while admissions with the permission of the Vice-Chancellor could be completed until August 14.
However, several colleges continued to have vacant seats even after the expiry of the prescribed deadlines. A number of applicants, particularly those from remote areas, had also been unable to complete the application and admission process within the stipulated period.
Considering these circumstances, the government decided to extend the admission deadline to August 31.
The department has advised eligible students who are yet to secure admission to utilise the extended opportunity and complete the admission process at colleges where seats are available.
