ACI Achieves World-First Laser Treatment for 100% Kidney Vein Obstruction

Successful Laser Angioplasty Performed at ACI Saves Patient from Renal and Heart Failure

TFP Bureau, Raipur; July 3, 2024: The Advanced Cardiac Institute (ACI) at Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar Smriti Hospital has made a groundbreaking achievement by successfully treating a 66-year-old patient with a 100% obstruction in the kidney vein using laser angioplasty. This is the first known case in medical literature of a complete kidney vein blockage being treated by this method.

The patient, who had severe blockages in both the renal artery and the main vein of the heart, was at risk of renal failure and heart failure. Under the leadership of Dr. Smit Srivastava, Head of the Department of Cardiology at ACI, the interventional procedures were performed simultaneously to address the chronic total occlusion of the left renal artery and the re-stenosis of the coronary artery.

Dr. Srivastava explained that the patient had a 100% blockage in one renal artery and a 70-80% blockage in the other, along with a previous coronary artery stent that had become completely blocked. These conditions had led to uncontrolled hypertension, deteriorating kidney function, and heart failure.

The innovative treatment began with laser angioplasty to create a pathway through the completely blocked renal artery, followed by balloon angioplasty to fully open the artery and restore normal blood flow to the kidney. This procedure resulted in significant improvements in the patient’s blood pressure and kidney function.

Simultaneously, the team addressed the coronary artery blockage. Using intravascular ultrasound, they confirmed the blockage’s location and severity. Laser angioplasty was used to open the blocked stent, followed by balloon angioplasty. A new stent was placed to ensure the artery remained open, successfully resolving the coronary obstruction.

Both procedures were monitored and guided by intravascular ultrasound to ensure precision and effectiveness. The patient has since shown remarkable recovery and is ready to be discharged.

This pioneering procedure at ACI not only saved the patient from potential renal and heart failure but also set a new precedent in the medical field for treating severe arterial blockages using laser angioplasty.
