TFP Bureau, Korba, April 22, 2025: Marking World Earth Day with a strong commitment to environmental stewardship, Bharat Aluminium Company Limited (BALCO), a subsidiary of Vedanta Aluminium, has introduced six electric vehicles (EVs) into its waste management fleet in Korba’s integrated township.
Each EV, with a load capacity of 1,000 kilograms, is designed to facilitate efficient and segregated waste collection. This move is aimed at streamlining systematic waste disposal while reducing the township’s carbon footprint. The new additions come as part of BALCO’s broader push to transition to sustainable mobility solutions.
Complementing the rollout, BALCO has also deployed electric lithium-ion forklifts across its operations, which are not only enhancing efficiency but also significantly cutting down on fuel consumption and emissions. The initiative supports BALCO’s goal of fully decarbonizing its Light Motor Vehicle (LMV) fleet by 2030.
To further encourage green commuting, BALCO is supporting employees in purchasing electric vehicles through subsidized rates. The company is also driving awareness through workshops, plantation drives, and community engagement on eco-friendly practices.
“At BALCO, we are actively investing in innovative green solutions that not only transform our operations but also inspire a broader movement toward sustainability,” said Mr. Rajesh Kumar, CEO & Director of BALCO. “By enabling cleaner technologies and fostering sustainable behavior, we are working to build a greener future for all.”
As part of its solid waste management efforts, BALCO has adopted the Solid and Liquid Resource Management (SLRM) model, which emphasizes segregation of waste at the source using color-coded bins. This structured approach ensures the efficient disposal of biodegradable, non-biodegradable, and sanitary waste.
The township, including green spaces like Nehru Garden that highlight native flora, reflects BALCO’s holistic approach to sustainable living and community well-being.
BALCO’s sustainability initiatives have earned national recognition, including the ‘Future Ready Factory of the Year’ award by IMEA and the ‘National Energy Leader’ accolade from CII at the Energy Excellence Summit. The company continues to embed sustainability across all facets of its operations.
