TFP Bureau, Korba, June 7, 2025: On the occasion of World Environment Day, Bharat Aluminium Company Limited (BALCO), a unit of Vedanta Aluminium, reinforced its commitment to environmental sustainability by showcasing its robust plastic waste management systems and circular economy initiatives. With over 200 metric tonnes of plastic waste sustainably processed since December 2023, BALCO has achieved 100% conscious disposal of all plastic waste generated in its township.
Through its partnership with Raipur-based Wastech India, BALCO has established an efficient waste segregation and disposal system. The plastic waste collected from the township is scientifically processed and sent to cement industries for co-processing, where it is used as an alternative raw material—thereby closing the waste loop and supporting the principles of a circular economy.
Integrated Solid & Liquid Resource Management in Action
BALCO has set up a Solid and Liquid Resource Management (SLRM) Centre, where waste is collected using electric vehicles and sorted using a colour-coded bin system. Biodegradable waste is composted, while non-biodegradable plastic waste is directed to certified processing partners. Regular community training sessions are also held to raise awareness on plastic alternatives and household-level waste segregation, promoting sustainable behaviour change.

Speaking on the occasion, Rajesh Kumar, CEO & Director of BALCO, said, “At BALCO, sustainability is a core part of our business. On World Environment Day, we reaffirm our commitment to responsible waste management and circular economy solutions. With this year’s theme, ‘Beat Plastic Pollution,’ we are taking decisive steps toward long-term, regenerative environmental impact, benefiting our communities and stakeholders alike.”
Plantation and Cleanliness Drives Mark Environment Day
To mark the day, BALCO conducted large-scale plantation and cleanliness drives within its plant and township premises. More than 300 employees and community members participated in these activities, planting over 600 saplings and taking part in clean-up campaigns and awareness rallies.
Ongoing Green Initiatives for a Plastic-Free Future
Beyond World Environment Day, BALCO has embedded sustainability across its operations through initiatives including:
- Creating plastic-free zones across its plant and township
- Distributing reusable cloth bags to reduce single-use plastics
- Using fabric-based materials for eco-friendly branding and events
- Adopting paper-based packaging for all CSR products
- Advocating against single-use plastics through employee and community outreach
These efforts are part of BALCO’s broader sustainability strategy focused on reducing environmental impact, promoting efficient resource use, and supporting community well-being. By aligning with global climate and environmental goals, BALCO continues to be a frontrunner in India’s green transition.
