TFP Bureau, Raipur, June 27, 2025: Chhattisgarh is witnessing an unprecedented transformation in its railway infrastructure, with development projects worth ₹47,000 crore currently underway. Spearheaded by Chief Minister Shri Vishnu Dev Sai, these initiatives aim to double the state’s rail network from 1,100 to 2,200 route kilometers by 2030, in line with Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s vision of a developed India and developed Chhattisgarh.
The 2025–26 Union Budget has allocated ₹6,925 crore for railway development in the state, paving the way for major infrastructure upgrades, new routes, and world-class station facilities. Two new Vande Bharat trains — Raipur–Visakhapatnam and Raipur–Nagpur — have already been introduced, and the state government is also planning a metro train survey.
32 Stations to Get Global-Standard Facilities
Under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, 32 railway stations in Chhattisgarh are being revamped with modern, world-class passenger amenities. Prime Minister Modi recently inaugurated five redeveloped stations — Ambikapur, Urkura, Bhilai, Bhanupratappur, and Dongargarh.
The redevelopment effort includes major overhauls of Bilaspur (₹435 crore), Raipur (₹463 crore), and Durg (₹456 crore) stations, contributing to a total investment of approximately ₹1,680 crore. Other stations undergoing transformation include Bhatapara, Bhilai Nagar, Uslapur, Jagdalpur, Korba, and more — reinforcing Chhattisgarh’s status as a rising transport hub.
Ongoing Rail Projects Worth Thousands of Crores
Multiple large-scale railway projects are currently under construction:
- Rajnandgaon–Nagpur Third Line: 228 km (48 km in CG), ₹3,544 crore
- Bilaspur–Jharsuguda Fourth Line: 206 km (153 km in CG), ₹2,135 crore
- Kharsia–Dharamjaigarh New Line: 162.5 km, ₹3,438 crore
- Gaurela–Pendra Road–Gevra Road Line: 156.81 km, ₹4,970 crore
- Gauge Conversion Projects (Kendri-Dhamtari, Abhanpur-Rajim): 67.2 km, ₹544 crore
- Boridand–Ambikapur Doubling: 80 km, ₹776 crore
- Chirmiri–Nagpur New Halt Line: 17 km, ₹622 crore
New Rail Project to Boost Bastar’s Development
In a major boost to the Bastar region, the Raoghat–Jagdalpur new rail line (140 km) has been approved with an investment of ₹3,513 crore. This line is expected to revolutionize connectivity and fuel tourism, trade, employment, and anti-Naxal efforts in the region. Simultaneously, the doubling of the KK Line (Kotvalsa–Kirandul) is progressing rapidly, with 148 km completed out of 170 km within Chhattisgarh.
Rail Connectivity Expands to Remote Tribal Regions
The final location survey for the proposed Kothagudem (Telangana)–Kirandul (Chhattisgarh) rail line is nearing completion. Covering 160.33 km — including 138.51 km across Sukma, Dantewada, and Bijapur — this project will bring rail access to some of the state’s most underserved tribal districts, offering new economic and employment opportunities.
Surveys Near Completion for Additional Major Projects
Surveys and DPRs (Detailed Project Reports) are in their final stages for multiple strategic rail lines:
- Ambikapur–Barwadih (200 km): ₹9,718 crore
- Kharsia–Naya Raipur–Parmalkasa (278 km): ₹7,854 crore
- Sardega–Bhalumada (37.24 km): ₹1,282 crore
- Dharamjaigarh–Pathalgaon–Lohardaga (301 km): ₹16,834 crore
Chhattisgarh Railway Corporation Also Drives Key Projects
The Chhattisgarh government, through its railway corporation, is actively pursuing several connectivity initiatives, focusing on enhancing freight corridors and passenger mobility, ultimately driving the state’s socio-economic progress.
