Chhattisgarh Revises Half Electricity Bill Scheme, Continues Support for 31 Lakh Consumers

TFP Bureau, Raipur, August 4, 2025: The Chhattisgarh government has revamped its Half Electricity Bill Scheme for domestic consumers, reducing the monthly relief from 50% on consumption up to 400 units to 50% relief up to 100 units per month. Despite this revision, approximately 31 lakh households—around 70% of the state’s 45 lakh domestic consumers—who use less than 100 units monthly will continue to benefit from the scheme.

Among these beneficiaries, 15 lakh Below Poverty Line (BPL) families will keep receiving up to 30 units of electricity completely free, alongside other existing scheme benefits.

In a parallel push towards sustainable energy, the state is actively promoting the PM Surya Ghar Yojana, which offers subsidies for rooftop solar installations. Consumers installing solar plants receive up to ₹1,08,000 in combined Central and State subsidies. For example, a 1 kW solar plant, generating roughly 120 units monthly, costs the consumer about ₹15,000 after a ₹45,000 subsidy. A 2 kW plant, producing around 240 units, requires ₹30,000 from the user after ₹90,000 subsidy, while a 3 kW system yields 360 units with ₹1,08,000 aid, leaving ₹72,000 payable.

Consumers with 2 kW or larger solar systems can generate over 200 units monthly for 25 years—surpassing the previous 200-unit relief under the half-bill scheme. This enables users not only to eliminate electricity bills but also to sell surplus power back to the grid, creating an income stream.

The PM Surya Ghar Yojana aims to foster affordable, sustainable energy use and propel Chhattisgarh towards energy self-reliance. The state envisions a shift from subsidized consumption to a ‘Zero Electricity Bill’ model where consumers become energy producers or “Urja-Datas” by harnessing rooftop solar power.

This initiative represents a major step towards clean energy adoption, economic savings for citizens, and the state’s commitment to a sustainable, self-sufficient energy future.
