TFP Bureau, New Delhi, September 15, 2025: The Income Tax Department announced today that more than seven crore Income Tax Returns (ITRs) have been filed for the current assessment year, with the number continuing to rise as the filing deadline draws near. Officials described this as one of the highest responses in recent years, underscoring the growing culture of compliance and the effectiveness of digital systems in handling large volumes of returns.
In its statement, the department expressed gratitude to taxpayers and tax professionals for helping achieve the milestone. It also urged those who have not yet filed their returns for Assessment Year 2025-26 to do so at the earliest, noting that timely compliance ensures faster refunds and avoids penalties. “More than seven crore ITRs have been filed so far and still counting. We extend our gratitude to taxpayers and tax professionals for helping us reach this milestone, and urge all those who haven’t filed ITR for AY 2025-26 to file their returns,” the department said.
The surge in filings is particularly visible in the final week leading up to the deadline. Officials said millions of salaried individuals, professionals, and business owners are accessing the portal daily, replicating a pattern seen in previous years when most returns were filed in the closing days. The department has also noted an increase in first-time filers, supported by continuous awareness campaigns and reminders.
To ensure smooth filing even during peak hours, the department has strengthened its assistance network. A round-the-clock helpdesk has been made available for queries related to return filing, tax payments, and related services. Support is being provided not only through calls and live chats but also through WebEx sessions and official channels on Twitter/X, allowing taxpayers to resolve their concerns quickly.
The department has stressed that failure to meet the deadline could invite penalties, interest on dues, and restrictions on carrying forward certain losses. Officials emphasized that timely filing is in the best interest of taxpayers, enabling them to access faster refunds and ensuring smooth processing of returns.
With the current momentum, authorities expect the final tally of ITRs filed to exceed all previous records, marking a significant step forward in India’s journey toward a more transparent, tech-driven, and compliant tax system.
