61 New PG Medical Seats Approved in Chhattisgarh, Boosting Total to 377

TFP Bureau, Raipur, October 17, 2025: Chhattisgarh has achieved another significant milestone in the field of medical education with the National Medical Commission (NMC) approving 61 new MD-MS postgraduate seats across government medical colleges in the state. With this addition, the total number of government PG medical seats in Chhattisgarh has risen from 316 to 377, while private medical colleges continue to offer 186 seats.

Commissioner of the Medical Education Department, Shikha Rajput Tiwari, said the approval marks a major stride in strengthening the state’s healthcare infrastructure. “The increase in PG seats will not only improve medical education but also expand the pool of specialist doctors available to serve in government hospitals. This will ensure that quality specialist services reach more citizens, particularly in remote and underserved regions,” she said.

The newly sanctioned 61 seats have been distributed among several state-run institutions: 21 seats at Chhattisgarh Institute of Medical Sciences, Bilaspur; 11 seats at Bharat Ratna Late Atal Bihari Vajpayee Memorial Medical College, Rajnandgaon; 8 seats at Late Baliram Kashyap Memorial Medical College, Jagdalpur; 12 seats at Late Lakhi Ram Agrawal Memorial Medical College, Raigarh; and 13 seats at Late Bisahu Das Mahant Memorial Medical College, Korba.

Health and Medical Education Minister Shyam Bihari Jaiswal expressed his appreciation for the development, calling it a “historic step” for Chhattisgarh’s medical education sector. “The approval of new PG seats will significantly increase the number of specialist doctors in the state and enhance the quality of healthcare available to the public. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, this decision strengthens our commitment to expanding medical facilities and improving health services for every citizen,” he said.

Officials emphasized that the move will have long-term benefits for both healthcare delivery and academic advancement. More PG seats will provide young medical graduates with enhanced opportunities for specialization within the state, reducing dependency on institutions outside Chhattisgarh.

The government expects that this expansion will lead to better staffing in district and regional hospitals, improved patient care, and faster access to specialist treatment. It is also seen as a step forward in the state’s vision of becoming self-reliant in the healthcare sector, ensuring that medical excellence translates into wider public service.

This achievement, coinciding with the festive season, is being viewed as a significant gift to the people of Chhattisgarh — one that promises a healthier, better-equipped future for the state’s medical and public health system.
