BALCO Steps Up Digital Transformation to Enhance Safety, Efficiency and Governance

Technology-led initiatives rolled out across operations to improve quality, transparency and sustainability

TFP Bureau, Korba/Balconagar, January 30, 2026:
Bharat Aluminium Company Limited (BALCO), India’s iconic aluminium producer and a part of Vedanta Aluminium, is accelerating its digital transformation journey by deploying a series of integrated technology-driven initiatives across its operations. The digital push spans the entire value chain, including the supply chain, potline, cast house, rolled products and carbon facilities, with the objective of improving operational efficiency, enhancing product quality, strengthening safety standards and reinforcing robust governance practices.

As digitalisation emerges as a key driver of competitiveness in the global metals and mining sector, BALCO’s initiatives are aligned with Vedanta Aluminium’s broader vision of building future-ready operations anchored in technology-led intelligence and data-driven decision-making. The company’s digital strategy reflects its commitment to responsible, sustainable and transparent growth in an increasingly complex industrial environment.

To strengthen quality assurance and customer confidence, BALCO has introduced the Quality Sankalp App, a digital platform that enables real-time monitoring of quality parameters on the shopfloor. The app allows employees to capture, track and review quality observations systematically, ensuring timely corrective actions and continuous improvement. In addition to quality monitoring, the platform integrates asset optimisation and health, safety and environment (HSE) observations, creating a unified framework for operational excellence.

BALCO has also made significant strides in digitising critical laboratory and production processes. The complete digitalisation of the Coal Laboratory has enabled automated data capture, real-time reporting and seamless integration of key test parameters such as moisture, ash, volatile matter and sulphur. These parameters are crucial for optimising process efficiency, improving environmental performance and strengthening governance. The integrated digital framework supports improved resource planning, tighter process control and informed decision-making across the value chain.

Highlighting the importance of technology adoption, Mr. Rajesh Kumar, CEO and Director of BALCO, said that digitalisation is not merely about deploying new tools, but about building a culture of transparency, accountability and continuous improvement. He noted that these initiatives have enhanced governance, improved quality standards and embedded safety across all levels of operations, reinforcing BALCO’s commitment to operational excellence in a rapidly evolving global landscape.

In the area of safety, BALCO has implemented a consequence management portal to systematically capture and monitor unsafe acts, conditions and work practices. The platform enables early identification of potential risks, supports timely intervention and ensures closure through structured tracking mechanisms. Complementing this is a 24×7 employee behavioural monitoring system that proactively identifies and mitigates risks associated with operations and vehicle movement, significantly strengthening preventive safety governance.

Further enhancing transparency and efficiency, BALCO has automated production and consumption booking processes across its metal operations. This initiative provides real-time visibility into production data, reduces manual intervention and improves reporting accuracy, thereby reinforcing governance and operational control.

Through these comprehensive digital initiatives, BALCO continues to leverage advanced technologies to optimise processes, enhance product quality, strengthen safety and governance, and build workforce readiness. The company’s technology-led transformation underscores its long-term vision of sustainable growth, operational resilience and global competitiveness.
