Month-long ‘Sadak Suraksha Jeevan Raksha’ campaign reinforces responsible road behaviour through awareness programmes, technology-led safety measures and community engagement.
TFP Bureau, Korba, February 3,2026: Bharat Aluminium Company Limited (BALCO), India’s iconic aluminium producer and a unit of Vedanta Aluminium, marked the 37th National Road Safety Month with an extensive awareness and engagement campaign, reaching more than 5,000 employees, business partners and community members across its operational areas. Conducted under the national theme ‘Sadak Suraksha Jeevan Raksha’, the month-long initiative underscored BALCO’s commitment to strengthening responsible road behaviour and promoting a culture of safety within and beyond its operations.
The comprehensive campaign unfolded across BALCO’s plant locations and surrounding communities, focusing on road discipline, traffic awareness and preventive safety practices. A wide range of participatory activities were organised, including quizzes, nukkad nataks, fire safety demonstrations, and drawing and slogan competitions for employees as well as school students. These initiatives were designed to simplify road safety messages and make them relatable for people of all age groups.
To encourage behavioural change among regular drivers, BALCO introduced ‘Road Rush’, a gamified learning module aimed at testing awareness levels and reinforcing safe driving habits. Awareness sessions and emergency response drills were also conducted in nearby schools, sensitising students about traffic rules, pedestrian safety and accident prevention from an early age. In addition, a dedicated carpooling challenge promoted shared responsibility, reduced congestion and encouraged sustainable commuting practices among employees.
As part of its focus on occupational and public safety, BALCO organised eye and health check-up camps for drivers operating heavy vehicles across its logistics network. Surprise vehicle inspections were carried out to ensure compliance with internal safety standards, proper vehicle conditions and strict adherence to traffic norms, particularly among transport partners.
Addressing the significance of the initiative, Rajesh Kumar, CEO and Director, BALCO, said road safety is a core pillar of the company’s Zero Harm philosophy. “Every safe journey reflects disciplined behaviour, awareness and accountability. Through sustained engagement with employees, business partners and communities, BALCO is building a culture where safety becomes a shared responsibility and a daily practice. Our objective is not limited to awareness, but to create measurable behavioural change that protects lives on and beyond our operational boundaries,” he said.
The impact of the campaign was evident among young participants as well. Mahak Yadav, a student of Bal Sadan School, said the sessions helped students understand the consequences of ignoring road rules. “We learned how small mistakes on the road can lead to big accidents. BALCO’s programme helped us understand road rules better, and I feel more confident about staying safe while travelling,” she said.
In parallel with awareness initiatives, BALCO continues to strengthen its safety ecosystem through the adoption of advanced technologies. These include the T-Pulse Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE) monitoring system, which uses AI-enabled camera networks to track on-ground activities and ensure compliance. The Centralised Security Operations Centre (CSOC) integrates digital intelligence and data analytics to enhance security management, traffic oversight and supply chain safety.
Other technology-led interventions include a Hot Spot Detection System at the coal yard for real-time hazard identification through thermal inspection, and the deployment of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and Driver Monitoring Systems (DMS) across internal vehicular operations to minimise risk within plant premises. Targeted health initiatives such as diabetes screening, training programmes on World Diabetes Day, and mental health counselling sessions further complement BALCO’s holistic well-being framework.
The company’s ‘Safety Stewards’ initiative continues to recognise and empower shop-floor employees and business partners who demonstrate consistent commitment to safety alongside operational responsibilities. Beyond the month-long campaign, BALCO conducts year-round safety sensitisation programmes for employees, families and local communities, supported by structured workshops and retro-reflective safety infrastructure.
BALCO’s sustained focus on safety excellence has earned it national and international recognition, including honours at the British Safety Council International Safety Awards 2025, reinforcing its position as an industry leader in safety and responsible operations.
