Facility strengthens strategic preparedness and disaster-response capabilities in the region, says Prime Minister
TFP Bureau, Dibrugarh, February 14,2026: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday inaugurated the first Emergency Landing Facility (ELF) in the northeastern region, marking a significant milestone in strengthening India’s strategic and disaster-management infrastructure. The facility, located in Dibrugarh district of Assam, is expected to play a crucial role during emergencies, natural disasters, and defence-related operations.
Terming the inauguration a moment of pride for the Northeast, the Prime Minister said the new Emergency Landing Facility would greatly enhance the region’s preparedness to respond swiftly in critical situations. He noted that the facility holds particular importance from a strategic standpoint, enabling the safe landing of aircraft during emergencies and ensuring operational continuity during unforeseen circumstances such as floods, earthquakes, or other natural calamities.
“The Northeast getting an Emergency Landing Facility is a matter of immense pride. From a strategic point of view and during times of natural disasters, this facility is of great importance,” the Prime Minister said in a post on X following the inauguration.
Officials said the ELF has been developed to support both civilian and defence aviation requirements, adding an extra layer of resilience to the region’s aviation and logistics network. The facility is designed to allow aircraft to land safely in the event of runway closures or other emergencies, thereby ensuring rapid movement of relief material, rescue teams, and essential supplies during crises.
The inauguration is seen as part of the Centre’s broader focus on improving infrastructure and connectivity in the northeastern states, while also addressing the region’s unique geographical and strategic needs. Over the past few years, the government has undertaken several initiatives to upgrade roads, airports, and other critical infrastructure across the Northeast to boost development, security, and disaster resilience.
With the commissioning of the Emergency Landing Facility in Dibrugarh, the Northeast is expected to gain a significant operational advantage, reinforcing its role in India’s strategic framework and enhancing the safety and security of its airspace during emergencies.
