Child Dies, Three Hospitalised After Allegedly Consuming Watermelon in Janjgir-Champa

Collector orders immediate probe; samples sent for laboratory testing as health teams conduct village-wide medical screening

TFP Bureau, Raipur, May 11, 2026: A tragic incident has been reported from Dhurkot village in Janjgir-Champa district, where a child died and three other children were hospitalised after reportedly consuming watermelon. The district administration has launched an immediate inquiry into the matter, while health officials have begun medical examinations of villagers as a precautionary measure.

According to official sources, the children’s health reportedly deteriorated shortly after they consumed watermelon, along with chicken, at their residence. Family members rushed the children for medical assistance when their condition worsened. However, one child succumbed before reaching the District Hospital in Janjgir. The three other children were admitted to the hospital, where they are currently undergoing treatment.

Upon receiving information about the incident, Collector Janmejay Mahobe took swift cognizance and directed senior officials to ensure immediate medical attention and a thorough investigation. The concerned Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) was instructed to reach the District Hospital to monitor the situation, while a medical team from the Health Department was promptly dispatched to Dhurkot village.

Acting on the Collector’s directives, the Janjgir SDM also sent a dedicated health team to conduct comprehensive health check-ups of all members of the affected family. In addition, the Tehsildar was directed to maintain constant vigilance in the village and coordinate with local authorities to prevent panic and ensure smooth communication.

Civil Surgeon Dr. S. Kujur confirmed that the three hospitalised children are under observation and that their condition has stabilised. He stated that doctors are closely monitoring their vital parameters and administering appropriate treatment. The exact cause of the sudden illness, however, will only be determined after laboratory analysis and medical reports are completed.

On the instructions of the Collector, samples of the watermelon allegedly consumed by the children have been collected and sent to a laboratory for testing. Authorities are examining the possibility of contamination or food poisoning. Furthermore, a post-mortem examination of the deceased child has been conducted at the District Hospital. Viscera samples have been preserved and sent for forensic analysis to ascertain the precise cause of death.

Meanwhile, the Health Department team continues to remain stationed in Dhurkot village. Officials are conducting door-to-door visits and health screenings of other residents to identify any additional cases of illness. Preventive measures are being taken to ensure that no further health complications arise in the area.

The district administration has assured that the matter is being investigated with utmost seriousness. Officials stated that appropriate legal and administrative action will be initiated based on the findings of the medical and laboratory reports. Authorities have also appealed to residents to remain calm and cooperate with the investigation until the exact cause of the incident is determined.
