Over 61,000 challans issued and 31,600 vehicles undergo fitness checks as State Road Safety Council reviews measures to reduce accidents
TFP Bureau, Raipur, June 9,2026: The Chhattisgarh government has stepped up efforts to reduce road accidents through enhanced use of technology, scientific vehicle inspections, improved driver training and stricter enforcement of traffic regulations.
The measures were reviewed during a meeting of the State Road Safety Council held at Mantralaya in Naya Raipur, chaired by Deputy Chief Ministers Shri Arun Sao and Shri Vijay Sharma along with Transport Minister Shri Kedar Kashyap. Senior officials from various departments and MLA Shri Anuj Sharma were also present.
During the meeting, officials informed the council that modern vehicle fitness centres, e-driving test tracks, Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras and advanced speed monitoring systems are being expanded across the state to strengthen road safety mechanisms. Between January and May 2026, fitness inspections were conducted on 31,604 vehicles, while more than 61,000 challans were issued through technology-enabled monitoring systems.
Deputy Chief Minister Shri Arun Sao said road safety is a collective responsibility and cannot be left to a single department. He emphasized the need for coordinated efforts involving road engineering, effective law enforcement and public awareness campaigns. He directed officials to regularly review accident-prone locations and ensure timely corrective measures to prevent mishaps.
Deputy Chief Minister Shri Vijay Sharma stated that preventing fatalities caused by road accidents remains one of the government’s highest priorities. He highlighted the role of modern technology in improving compliance with traffic regulations and called for stronger coordination among enforcement agencies. He also stressed the importance of creating greater awareness about traffic rules among students and young motorists.
Transport Minister Shri Kedar Kashyap said the state government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Shri Vishnu Deo Sai, is committed to developing a safer and more efficient transport system. He noted that efforts are being made to strengthen road safety through a combination of technology, driver training, public participation and effective enforcement. The meeting was informed that modern fitness centres are currently operational in several districts, including Raipur, Bilaspur, Ambikapur, Jagdalpur, Durg, Rajnandgaon, Korba, Janjgir-Champa and Raigarh, where vehicle inspections are being conducted using scientific methods.
To improve driving standards, e-driving test tracks have been established in multiple districts, while work is underway to develop similar facilities in eight additional districts during the 2026-27 financial year. Regional driving training centres are functioning in Bilaspur and Jagdalpur, alongside driver training centres operating in 14 other districts.
Officials reported that 174 ANPR cameras and seven LiDAR-based speed detection cameras have been installed across the state. These systems played a key role in issuing more than 61,000 challans for traffic violations between January and May this year. Additionally, speed governors have been installed in 2.68 lakh vehicles to improve road safety and regulate vehicle speeds.
The council was also informed that the Institute of Driving and Traffic Research (IDTR) in Naya Raipur is providing modern driver training programmes. A total of 15,779 drivers received training during 2025, while 4,064 drivers were trained up to April 2026.
Enforcement efforts have also yielded substantial results. Between January and April 2026, authorities collected ₹62.21 crore in compounding fees from approximately 2.86 lakh vehicles for violations of traffic regulations. In cases involving serious offences, 7,434 driving licences were suspended or cancelled during the 2025-26 period.
