With the theme “Yoga for Healthy Aging,” this year’s International Day of Yoga emphasises lifelong physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Chhattisgarh will host its main state-level celebration in Ambikapur, where Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai will lead the programme.
TFP Bureau, Raipur, June 20, 2026: Yoga, an ancient Indian tradition rooted in holistic health and spiritual well-being, is set to take centre stage once again as the country celebrates the International Day of Yoga 2026 on June 21 with the theme, “Yoga for Healthy Aging.”
Recognised globally after the United Nations adopted India’s proposal in 2014 following an initiative by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the annual observance has grown into a worldwide movement promoting healthier lifestyles and overall well-being. This year’s theme highlights the importance of yoga in maintaining physical fitness, mental balance, and emotional resilience throughout every stage of life.
According to officials, yoga is increasingly being viewed not only as a preventive healthcare practice but also as an effective means of fostering active and healthy ageing. The practice is believed to help reduce stress, improve flexibility and strength, and encourage a balanced lifestyle amid modern-day health challenges.
At the national level, the main International Day of Yoga event will be held in Kolkata, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to lead the yoga session. He has consistently described yoga as a way of life that harmonises individuals with society and nature while strengthening families and communities through better health.
In Chhattisgarh, the principal state-level celebration will be organised in Ambikapur under the leadership of Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai. The Chief Minister is expected to participate in the mass yoga session and encourage citizens to adopt regular yoga practice as part of a healthy lifestyle.
The state government, in collaboration with educational institutions, panchayats, government departments, and social organisations, is organising yoga programmes across Chhattisgarh to increase public participation. Officials said special emphasis is being placed on incorporating yoga into health awareness initiatives and promoting it among students and communities.
With its rich natural environment and cultural traditions, Chhattisgarh’s rural and tribal regions already reflect many principles associated with harmonious living and wellness. Regular yoga activities are being promoted in schools, colleges, Anganwadi centres, and government institutions as part of broader efforts to build a healthier society.
As lifestyle-related diseases and stress continue to rise, health experts and policymakers alike are advocating yoga as an accessible and effective practice for improving physical fitness, mental calmness, and overall quality of life. The observance of International Day of Yoga 2026 is expected to reinforce the message that yoga should become a daily habit rather than remain a once-a-year event, contributing to the vision of a healthier Chhattisgarh and a developed India.
