Government Urges Media to Refrain from Live Coverage of Defence Operations to Safeguard National Security

TFP Bureau, New Delhi, April 26, 2025: The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has issued a stern advisory to all media channels, urging them to avoid live coverage of defence operations and movements of security forces in the interest of national security. The directive emphasizes the critical need for responsible reporting, particularly during sensitive military and security operations, to avoid compromising operational effectiveness and the safety of personnel.

The advisory highlights the risks posed by the premature dissemination of sensitive information, stressing that “real-time coverage” or “source-based” reporting could inadvertently assist hostile elements. This, in turn, could undermine the success of ongoing operations and endanger the lives of security personnel.

The government reminded media platforms of past incidents where unrestricted coverage led to unintended consequences. Key events such as the Kargil War, the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, and the Kandahar hijacking underscored the potential dangers of inadequate media restrictions during national security events. In these instances, unsupervised media reporting had serious repercussions, including the potential for enemy forces to exploit sensitive details.

The advisory reiterates the need for adherence to Rule 6(1)(p) of the Cable Television Networks (Amendment) Rules, 2021, which prohibits live coverage of anti-terrorism operations. The rule mandates that media coverage should be limited to periodic briefings provided by a designated government official until such operations conclude.

Media organizations, including digital platforms and individual users, are reminded of their collective responsibility to safeguard national security. The Ministry emphasized that reporting on security matters should prioritize vigilance, sensitivity, and adherence to legal frameworks to prevent any action that might compromise the safety and security of the nation and its armed forces.

This directive follows earlier advisories issued by the Ministry, reinforcing the critical role of responsible media reporting in maintaining the security of the country. Any violations of the Cable Television Networks (Amendment) Rules may result in legal action.

The advisory has been issued with the approval of the competent authority in the Ministry, underscoring the importance of compliance from all stakeholders involved in media coverage.
