Mahagenco Inaugurates Gare-Palma Sector II Coal Mine in Raigarh

TFP Bureau, Raigarh, September 19, 2025: Maharashtra State Power Generation Company Limited (Mahagenco) has inaugurated the Gare-Palma Sector II (GP-II) coal mine in Tamnar tehsil of Raigarh district, marking the beginning of operations at one of Chhattisgarh’s largest coal projects. The formal launch took place with the initiation of the box cut activity, attended by Mahagenco’s Chairman and Managing Director, B. Radhakrishnan (IAS), along with senior directors, executive officials, local villagers, and administrative authorities.

A Major Step in Energy Security

With an annual production capacity of 23.6 million tonnes, the GP-II coal mine is expected to play a crucial role in reducing India’s dependence on imported coal and ensuring reliable fuel supply to Maharashtra’s major thermal power plants, including Chandrapur, Koradi, and Parli. The mine’s production will support more than 3,200 MW of power generation, contributing significantly to the national grid and advancing the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat.

Employment and Revenue Generation

The project is set to create approximately 3,400 direct jobs and thousands of indirect employment opportunities, providing livelihood support for local villagers in Raigarh district. Beyond employment, the mine will contribute substantial revenue to the state exchequer through royalties, GST, and other taxes, thereby promoting regional development and social welfare initiatives.

Environmental and Social Commitments

Mahagenco has pledged to maintain ecological balance while undertaking the large-scale project. Over the next 32 years, the company will plant 5.64 million trees of indigenous species across 2,256.60 hectares. Alongside its environmental efforts, the company also announced commitments to invest in education, healthcare, and skill development programs as part of its corporate social responsibility.

Operations to Begin in January

Coal production is scheduled to commence in January 2026, following today’s ceremonial launch and completion of box cut excavation. All necessary environmental, forest, mining, and administrative approvals for the project have already been secured.

CMD B. Radhakrishnan said on the occasion that the GP-II coal mine represents a milestone in both energy and social development.

“This project will not only help us secure coal supplies for Maharashtra’s power plants but also generate employment, revenue, and long-term development opportunities for Chhattisgarh. We are committed to carrying forward this project with a balance of growth, sustainability, and social responsibility,” he stated.

The inauguration of the GP-II coal mine stands as a historic milestone for Chhattisgarh, combining industrial progress with local development and environmental stewardship. The mine is poised to contribute significantly to India’s energy security while providing enduring benefits for the people of Raigarh district.
