BALCO Marks World Water Day with Major Community-Led Water Conservation Drive

‘More Jal More Mati’ campaign rejuvenates traditional water sources, boosts rural livelihoods and strengthens sustainable water management

TFP Bureau, Korba, March 23, 2026: In a significant step towards promoting sustainable water management, Bharat Aluminium Company Limited (BALCO), a Vedanta Group company, launched a large-scale community water conservation campaign on the occasion of World Water Day. The initiative, undertaken under its flagship ‘More Jal More Mati’ project, witnessed the active participation of over 150 employees and local residents, highlighting a collective commitment to preserving traditional water resources and ensuring responsible water usage.

The campaign focused on pond rejuvenation and restoration of traditional water bodies, reinforcing the importance of community-driven environmental stewardship. BALCO stated that the initiative not only aims to conserve water but also to create long-term ecological and economic benefits for rural communities.

Over the years, the ‘More Jal More Mati’ project has made a substantial impact across the region. To date, water conservation and rejuvenation efforts have been carried out in more than 40 villages, significantly improving water availability and supporting agricultural activities. A total of 158 water conservation structures have been developed under the project, including 129 farm ponds, 15 community ponds, 12 check dams, and two lined ponds. These structures collectively offer a storage capacity of over 2.3 lakh cubic metres of water.

In the ongoing financial year 2025–26, the company has further strengthened its efforts by constructing 22 additional water structures—21 farm ponds and one community pond—with a combined capacity of around 22,000 cubic metres. These developments have played a crucial role in enhancing irrigation facilities and reducing dependence on erratic rainfall patterns.

BALCO CEO and Director Rajesh Kumar emphasized that water conservation remains central to sustainable development. He noted that the project is helping communities revive critical water resources while simultaneously improving agricultural productivity, livelihoods, and ecological balance. He reaffirmed the company’s commitment to responsible water usage and environmental protection, especially on occasions like World Water Day.

The initiative has brought tangible benefits to farmers in the region. With improved access to water for irrigation, farmers are now able to cultivate multiple crops throughout the year, leading to increased agricultural output and higher incomes. Additionally, improved water availability has supported livestock rearing, further strengthening rural livelihoods.

Local farmers have also begun exploring alternative income sources. Around 80 farmers associated with the project have taken up fish farming, earning an average of ₹20,000 per crop cycle. Beneficiaries report improved financial stability and greater resilience against climate uncertainties.

Sandhya Bai, a farmer from Bhatgaon near Korba, shared that the construction of a farm pond has enabled her to pursue fish farming and vegetable cultivation simultaneously, significantly enhancing her family’s income and quality of life.

Beyond economic gains, the initiative has contributed to environmental sustainability by improving groundwater levels and promoting efficient rainwater harvesting. The rejuvenation of ponds and construction of water structures have reduced water runoff and wastage while helping maintain ecological balance in surrounding areas.

BALCO officials noted that such initiatives not only strengthen environmental conservation efforts but also build trust and cooperation between the company and local communities. The ‘More Jal More Mati’ project stands as a model for integrated rural development, combining water security, livelihood generation, and environmental stewardship to create a sustainable future.
